I'm a little confused by the story, but I think I agree with the club owner, appreciate the strippers and disagree with the King

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Activists gathered outside a downtown strip club Monday to denounce as racist a banner depicting President Obama as the Joker from Batman.
"Not only is it an attack on the president, but also on all men and people of African descent," King Salim Khalfani, president of the Virginia NAACP, said of what he called "the abomination that's on the wall" outside Club Velvet.
The banner, unfurled within the past few days, depicts Obama as Heath Ledger's grotesque Joker character from "The Dark Knight." The president is shown with smeared red lipstick, a white face and darkened eyes. The word "socialism" is spelled out below the caricature.
Dancer Kaitlyn McGee handed out a statement from club owner Sam Moore, who did not appear. The statement described him as a "staunch libertarian" and said the banner was intended to show his displeasure with Obama's policies. McGee walked through the crowd with a sign that read "Strippers 4 Obama" to show that Moore is not opposed to the president himself.
"Mr. Moore would like to say that anyone who believes that his banner is racist is an ignoramus," it read.
But the activists said the Joker banner was typical of what they called escalating attacks on the president - from depictions of Obama as Hitler at rallies to South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's "You lie!" outburst during Obama's recent nationally televised address to Congress.
"Racism is as American as apple pie," Khalfani said. "The presence of a president that as African blood is very, very troublesome to many in this country."
McGee, who described herself as a waitress and dancer, said customers had not complained since the banner was unfurled at the busy intersection in Shockoe Bottom, a historic entertainment and residential district.
"As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't really bother me," she said. "You could say a lot worse things about him."

As a child with "The Jackson Five," Michael had a nice little voice and was very cute shaking his hips like an adult (The sexualization of children Michael's age when he performed with his brothers is another article entirely.). But as an adult, Jackson's voice - OK for pop but no great shakes for any other milieu - was thin as a reed with an annoying false vibrato and a squeaky "hiccup" that supposedly drove female fans nuts.His "dancing" was unique but repetitive. And I find it incredible that some would actually compare him to people with genuine talent like Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire. It goes without saying that neither of those two giants had to grab their crotch on stage to excite their fans.Gregiry Hines was a superior dancer. Just about any Motown artist of the 60's and 70's was a superior singer. Michael Jackson, the total entertainment package, was a good showman but hardly an earth shattering talent. The outpouring of tributes to him today is a fascinating exercise in wishful - perhaps delusional thinking. Proclaiming anyone "King of Pop" and waxing lyrical about how his talent impacted the music world is a misnomer. It wasn't Jackson's "talent" that affected future pop artists but rather his "style" - a completely different kettle of fish altogether. It certainly was original but worthy of the kind of encomiums we are reading and hearing today? Not hardly.In short, he was not a "no-talent" but rather a performer of limited gifts who, through savvy marketing, a recognition of trends (such as producing music videos that went far beyond concert performances that was standard fare for most MTV selections), and an eccentric personality, hit the world of pop music at exactly the right moment in history.A comparison to Elvis Presley is useful here. Presely was also a performer of limited ability but hit America at exactly the right time in history when his shockingly unique style (and having Tom Parker, a man ahead of his time, managing his career), brought unusual success. Elvis was also a great showman and his later career was sustained by his aging female fans who never tired of watching him grind out the old favorites on a Las Vegas stage.Perhaps it is the nature of pop music today to elevate these performers to heights undreamed of by real talents like Sinatra, Garland, Sammy Davis, Jr., and others whose pop stylings will last forever - even beyond the lifetimes of their fans. I say this not out of spite because I genuinely enjoyed Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It as well as other pop music of the day. Although limited in their artistic success, performers like Jackson reflected their times perfectly as all good pop music does. But does this mean that we should elevate Jackson to an artistic pedestal. Not hardly.I sympathize with many in Jackson's family today. Losing a brother or a son is always a tragedy. But I don't sympathize with Jackson's rabid fans. Losing oneself in the doings of someone who is deliberately manipulating your emotions is a form of narcissm. I suppose like most, I will mourn Jackson's passing as I have many icons of my youth who have left us. Farrah Fawcett, who also died yesterday, elicits the same yearning in my heart to return to what in my misty memory were simpler times when responsibilities were few and I had the optimism and confidence that the whole world was before me for the taking.I really wish the media weren't making such a big deal of Jackson's death. Other, more vital stories like Iran, health care, and the continuing power grabs of the Obama administration are given short shrift. But covering Jackson means a big audience so one can hardly fault the media for trying to cash in. They'd be crazy not to milk the story for all its worth.In 100 years, will historians be amazed at the popularity of people like Jackson? Hopefully by then, we will have outgrown our compulsion to place these people on a mountaintop and all but worship their every move.

Dance review: Dolls' 'Romeo' recasting is a mashup that fails to gel

Choreographer Myron Johnson's recasting of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" as a tale of same-sex, star-crossed lovers would appear to be a dovetailing of like sensibilities. Like the Bard, Johnson mixes elements of high art and popular culture in entertaining works with plenty of poetry and imbedded social commentary.
His "Romiette and Juleo" honors the GLBT community and strongly condemns those who persecute it. Ballet of the Dolls, his company of dancers, perform with their usual commitment and brio. But ultimately this work seems cobbled together from undigested fragments rather than honed from a deeply felt theatrical vision.
The production references "West Side Story," the courts of medieval Italy and contemporary GLBT culture. But the jarring collage of music (Enigma, Mary J. Blige, Leonard Bernstein and Meshell Ndegeocello, to name a few) tends to overpower the dancing, encrusting it with sentimentality, heavy metal and heavy messages.
Johnson splits Romeo and Juliet into three couples — one heterosexual (Joy Langer and Grant Wittaker) and two same-sex (Joel Klausler and Doug Melroe, Lisa Conklin and Stephanie Fellner). They are innocents in a corrupt world, harassed by homophobic adults and lured by transgressive delights. In a club scene, for example, the couples observe a group of androgynes in bras and jockstraps bumping and grinding their way through a steamy routine that hints, alluringly, of multiple identities and erotic possibilities.
high extensions or tightly wound in speedy turns from exhibition jazz and club dance, fused with bland balletic gestures. The dancing often looks generic, its relationship to the music unfocused. To Bernstein's explosive, rhythmically complex "Dance at the Gym," for instance, Johnson sets a tepid mambo.
While this may be a reference to the decorum of medieval court dance, it comes off as weak tea served with hot salsa.
There are certainly jarring scenes of violence and mayhem. Guys in black suits round up three of the protagonists, throw hoods over their heads and mime some serious trashing and bashing as the lovers look helplessly. The scene graphically connects events like the Stonewall riots to prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib in ways both compelling and simplistic — like propaganda poster art. Far more poignant is the final scene in which the three "prisoners" who have died are gently manipulated like rag dolls by their grieving partners, who then dispatch themselves with daggers.
In a section that truly captures the poignancy of these outcasts and their predicament, two nuns bless and unite the couples to a lilting, lively spiritual that goes uncredited in the program. Through simple and uncluttered walking, kneeling, rocking and surging in kaleidoscopic patterns, the dancers reflect the ebb and flow of healing currents and the fluidity of sexual identity. Riddled with the spirit of ecumenical inclusion, the nuns begin shaking, quaking and moving on out. The healing, however briefly, has begun.

Schoolchildren as young a five who were looking forward to a Jonas Brothers film were shown a hard-core porn movie instead.

The children were subjected to 45 seconds of the X-rate filth before a horrified teacher frantically ripped out the DVD player's plug.
The headteacher of the New York City school pledged to find whoever was responsible for the "despicable" act.
Parents initially heard the DVD player had been locked in his office before the film was shown- but it later emerged it had been in an open area where anyone could have tampered with it.
Mum Rona Easton told the New York Post: "My son told his friend he saw a naked lady at school."
She added: "I thought he was just being silly. It's appalling."
Five classes had been taken into an auditorium to watch "Camp Rock," a Disney Channel movie starring the Jonas Brothers according to headteacher Robert Marchi.
But he wrote to parents that a "very explicit pornographic video came on the screen."
He said: "This was extremely upsetting to the students and staff members in attendance . . . I am deeply sorry that this episode took place at PS 17. I know that we will make every effort to find out who was responsible for this despicable act."

Indian sex workers learn karate
Prostitutes in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu have begun taking karate lessons to protect themselves from violent customers and pimps.
The women say they were so fed up with abuse that they approached a local community group for help.
The organisers hope the course in the ancient self-defence technique sends a message that violence against sex workers must stop.
India is thought to have nearly three million sex workers.
Most live on the fringes of society and have few legal rights.
Correspondents say that means they often have little or no choice but to put up with violence and harassment.

Dressed in white and wearing masks, the first 75 women to take the karate course in the coastal city of Madras (Chennai) had to brave intense heat as they practised their moves.

"I think I can easily handle one man at any given time. I face physical abuse on a daily basis and have been abused and been beaten up by my clients many times.
"A thug once stripped me of my clothes and told me to run naked. From now on, I think nobody can do that to me. I will kick him."
The Indian Community Welfare Organisation is providing the training free of charge. Its founder secretary, AJ Hariharan, said Tamil Nadu state alone was thought to have about 90,000 commercial sex workers.
"Many of them, particularly those who operate individually on the streets face physical abuse on a daily basis - not only from their customers, but also from local thugs and policemen," he told the BBC Tamil service.
"They attack these commercial sex workers, rob their money and force them into having unprotected sex. We want to train them in karate so that they can protect themselves from these violent attacks."
Mr Hariharan said the aim was to build the self esteem and self confidence of the women.
"We are going to train 300 sex workers in the second phase and 500 sex workers after that.

AN erotic dance craze is thought to be the cause of a recent spate of broken penises in Jamaica, and now faces a government crackdown.

"Daggering", a lewd dance style where couples simulate dry sex in various positions to the beat of the music, is characterised by over-the-top gyrating, heavy pelvis-thrusting and daredevil leaps.

Many couples have taken the daggering dance from the club to the bedroom, with disastrous consequences.

Jamaican doctors were prompted to issue a warning on the dangers of daggering when presented with a range of fractured penises caused by rough intercourse.

The number of cases tripled in the last year, the UK's Sun reports.

The rising popularity of the new dance - and subsequent public protests - have prompted the Jamaican government to ban songs and videos with blatantly sexual content.
Jamaica's Broadcasting Commission, which defines daggering as a "colloquial term used in dancehall culture as a reference to hardcore sex or what is popularly referred to as 'dry sex' or the activities of persons engaged in the public simulation of various sexual acts and positions", enforced the ban in February.

"There shall not be transmitted through radio or television or cable services, any recording, live song or music video which promotes the act of 'daggering', or which makes reference to, or is otherwise suggestive of 'daggeringâ'," the Jamaican Broadcasting Commission's official statement said.

Daggering is a newly accepted name for an activity that has been present in Jamaica's dancehalls for many years. It is roughly the equivalent of the Caribbean's "cabin stabbing", another crude style of music and dance.

"Daggering is a dance that makes you unleash the beast! If you ain't know what I mean think about every sex position and put it in a dance," commenter Driva said of the dance.

A series of YouTube videos depict daggering as a rough, and sometimes violent, act which can be demeaning to women. One video shows popular group RDX performing its song Daggering live, with one member simulating extremely rough dry sex on the floor with a woman.
The community is divided over the dance, with singers up in arms over the ban, saying it stifles their right to free speech, but others welcome the ban.

Police: Handgun handed off at airport, gets on plane

A U.S. Airways employee was being questioned by authorities this morning after a bag containing an unloaded gun apparently circumvented security and made it onto a plane at Philadelphia International Airport, police said.
A passenger waiting to board Flight 1195, destined for Phoenix, noticed another passenger handing a carry-on bag directly to the airline employee, said Officer Christine O'Brien, a Philadelphia police spokeswoman.
The bag was not sent through normal secuity screening, O'Brien said, making the waiting passenger suspicious. The passenger alerted officials with the Transportation Security Administration.
A TSA employee boarded the plane, located the suspect bag in an overhead compartment, and found that it contained an unloaded handgun, O'Brien said.
The incident took place at about 7:40 a.m., she said.
The owner of the bag and the U.S. Airways worker were being questioned this morning, police said.
The flight, which was originally scheduled to depart at 7:10 a.m., was delayed almost four hours, finally taking off shortly after 11.
Instead of arriving in Phoenix at shortly after 9 a.m., it was scheduled to reach Phoenix after 1 p.m., according to USAir's website.
Spokespersons for U.S. Airways and the TSA declined to comment on specifics of the incident, saying the FBI had taken over the investigation.
"Safety and security is our first and foremost priority in everything we do," Morgan Durrant, senior manager of corporate communications for the airline, said in an e-mailed statement. "We are cooperating with investigators fully and take security considerations very seriously. Further comment right now is not appropriate out of respect to the ongoing investigation."

WEST PALM BEACH — A man has sued the Cheetah nightclub and a stripper, alleging he was badly injured when she struck him in the face with her leg or foot while he was seated at a bar.
Michael Ireland was at Cheetah on Sept. 28, 2008, when he was struck "suddenly and without warning" by Sakeena Shageer, according to the negligence suit filed last week by litigator Lake Lytal III against Shageer and Cheetah's parent company, Casablanca East LLC.
Shageer, 28, - also known by her stage name "Suki" - is a registered exotic dancer in Palm Beach County, records show. In her 2004 application for a permit, she described herself as 5-foot-1 and 118 pounds.
Lytal believes Shageer spun around and struck Ireland in the face with her shoe. Even if it was an accident, he said, Ireland, a local businessman, was seriously injured in the incident at the suburban West Palm Beach nightclub.
Ireland suffered broken bones around his eye and in his nose and now has permanent double vision, Lytal said. Ireland has had one surgery and needs another.
Lytal said he was forced to sue after Cheetah's insurance carrier refused to pay damages.
"We're hopeful the club's insurance company will still do the right thing," Lytal said.
Shageer did not return a call seeking comment. Joe Rodriguez, the registered agent of Casablanca East LLC, also did not return a call. Michael Ireland could not be reached for comment.
Strip club lawsuits that have made headlines have centered on the hazard of sky-high platform shoes strippers frequently wear.
Last year in New York, a man sued after a stripper giving him a lap dance swiveled and smacked him in the face with her shoe. A Broward man sued after a woman's stiletto flew off during a pole dance, shattering a mirror and cutting him.
Lytal said he has yet to depose the dancer and has no idea what kind of shoes she was wearing. "But we will certainly be inquiring," he said.
According to a Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office report filed after the incident, Shageer acknowledged being atop the bar at the time, Lytal said. But he's unsure whether she was dancing.
"Although I'm not sure what else she would be doing," Lytal said.

Wash. man sentenced for having sex with dogs

CHEHALIS, Wash. – A Washington state man has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for having sex with his two dogs.
Troy Whitson entered an Alford plea Monday in Lewis County Superior Court, meaning he admitted no wrongdoing but acknowledged he'd likely be convicted.
The 21-year-old from the town of Cinebar (SI'-ne-bahr) is restricted from owning animals for two years.
His malamutes have been placed with new owners.
Prosecutor Michael Golden said Whitson is a member of a group known as Furries who identify with animals and dress the part in makeup, ears and tail.
Golden says Furries gather for social events but having sex with animals is not part of their normal behavior. He says two of Whitson's Furry friends witnessed the animal sex and turned him in.

4th Stites brother is charged with sexual assault

MANITOWOC — Thomas M. Stites, 25, of Francis Creek, made his initial appearance Monday on a first-degree, sexual-assault-of-a-child charge before the Manitowoc County Circuit Court.
Stites is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 9:30 a.m. June 9. He remains jailed in lieu of $10,000 bail.
A young girl told law enforcement she was 6 years old when Stites raped her in the spring of 2005, according to a criminal complaint filed Wednesday.
The girl told Manitowoc police detectives Thomas Stites and his brother, Carl J. Stites, 20, of Manitowoc, forced her to have sex with Thomas Stites in order to play video games. Carl Stites held her arms on the ground while Thomas Stites assaulted her, according to the complaint.
An investigation into Carl Stites' role in the assault is continuing, Manitowoc police Capt. Scott Luchterhand said.
Thomas Stites is the sixth Stites family member to be charged with sexual assault-related crimes.
His brother, Michael E. Stites, 38, of Manitowoc, pleaded guilty May 7 to repeatedly sexually assaulting two teenage girls in Manitowoc County. Michael Stites also was convicted in Brown County of three counts of sexually assaulting his children's then 14-year-old baby-sitter in September 1998.
Jason C. Stites, 27, of New Berlin, another brother, is charged with five felonies.
He is accused of videotaping a teenage couple having sex while he chaperoned the minors in Manitowoc County. Stites' attorney, Ryan Kautzer, filed a motion May 19 to dismiss the case. A motion hearing is schedule for 9:30 a.m. Friday.
Carl Stites has been convicted of two counts of child enticement. He had sexual contact with a then 15-year-old boy in August 2006. He also had sexual contact with an adolescent girl between 2004 and 2005.
Charlene P. Stites, 43, of Manitowoc, Michael Stites' wife, is charged with repeated sexual assault of a child.
She is scheduled to meet with lawyers in the district attorney's office for a June 30 settlement conference.
Adam M. Stites, 18, of Manitowoc, Charlene and Michael Stites' son, has been convicted of three misdemeanor fourth-degree sexual assault charges — two counts in Kewaunee County and one count in Manitowoc County. He also is serving a deferred judgment agreement on a felony sex-related charge that will be dismissed if he fulfills the terms of the agreement.

"Newborn Abandoned in Motel Room Littered With Beer Cans

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A newborn is being cared for at a hospital after being found abandoned — umbilical cord still attached — in a West Springfield motel room littered with empty beer cans.
Police said the baby was discovered early Saturday by a couple returning to the room next door at the Welcome Inn.
Kimberly Dougherty told the Republican newspaper of Springfield that she heard a weak cry coming from the next room. The door was ajar and when she entered, she found the baby girl lying on her back in the middle of a double bed.
Dougherty said she and her husband wrapped the baby in towels until paramedics arrived and took the infant to Baystate Medical Center.
Dougherty guessed that the baby was only an hour or two old.
Investigators are trying to track down the mother."

That asset may become a liability, because users can get a taste of porn videos on Bing instead of having to go to a smutty Web site — an innovation other search engines have yet to offer.
Technology blogger Loic Le Meur noticed the issue early Monday after testing video search on Bing.
What he found was a cornucopia of pornography that he said transformed the search engine into its very own pornographic Web site.
"You are now on a porn site without leaving Bing. Amazing," Le Meur wrote on his blog.

A 25-year-old Egyptian man cut off his own penis to spite his family after he was refused permission to marry a girl from a lower class family, police reported on Sunday.
After unsuccessfully petitioning his father for two years to marry the girl, the man heated up a knife and sliced off his reproductive organ, said a police official.
The young man came from a prominent family in the southern Egyptian province of Qena, one of Egypt's poorest and most conservative areas.
The man was rushed to hospital, but doctors were unable to reattach the severed organ, the official added.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak with the press, added that the man was still recovering in the hospital.

When police wanted to question a teacher accused of having an affair with an eighth-grader at a private religious school, she was out of town -- vacationing at Disney World with the student.
Upon her return Saturday, 32-year-old Maria Guzman Hernandez, a sixth-grade teacher at Hialeah's Our Lady of Charity, admitted to Hialeah police she'd had sex with the 15-year-old.
Hernandez was charged with sexual battery on a child over whom she had custodial authority, a charge similar to statutory rape.
The boy's mother, who acknowledged to both police and Department of Children & Families investigators that she approved of the relationship, is under investigation by both agencies for permitting the teen to have a months-long affair with the teacher, and for consenting to the theme park trip.
Hernandez and the teen had a ''sexual relationship'' for several months, and the boy told police they had been ''sexually active'' since March, according to a police report. The two met at the school, 1900 W. 44th Pl.
Detective Carl Zogby, a Hialeah police spokesman, said many of the couple's romantic encounters occurred at the apartment the boy shared with his mother.
''She apparently didn't find anything wrong with it, thought that the teacher was a nice enough person and a good influence on her son,'' Zogby said.
The teacher, who had been in good standing at the school, was asked to resign.
After being read her rights, Hernandez, who had been a teacher at the school for four years, admitted to having sex with the teen, Hialeah Detective Felix Mendigutia wrote in the police report.
She was released on $10,000 bail Sunday afternoon, according to Janelle Hall, a jail spokeswoman.
Hernandez, who is estranged from her husband, told DCF investigators ''she was going through a lot in her life,'' said Jacqui Colyer, chief of the Miami DCF office. Hernandez's two children attend the Hialeah school.
Police have not charged the boy's mother, though they are still investigating her actions and deciding whether to file charges, Zogby said. The Miami Herald is not naming her in order to protect her son's identity.
A separate DCF investigation into whether the mom failed to protect her son is ongoing, Colyer said.
The mom told authorities she had consented to the affair.
''She didn't see anything wrong with it, and that's the challenge,'' Colyer said.
DCF has not removed the boy from his mother's custody, but the agency is planning to ask a child welfare judge to order the mom to accept services from the state. DCF has offered counseling to the boy and the rest of his family, Colyer said.
The mother migrated to the United States from Cuba.
In South Florida, the social service agency frequently provides outreach and education to new migrants whose parenting philosophies may not be acceptable, Colyer said.
''Parents can not allow their children to have [sexual] relationships with adults. That's just not acceptable in the United States,'' Colyer said. ``That will not be acceptable under any circumstances.''
Rumors began circulating at the school around May 20. For two days, principal Xenia Torres struggled with whether to report the rumored affair to DCF's abuse hot line, but a school attorney insisted they had no choice under a state law that mandates the reporting of all suspected child abuse or neglect, Colyer said.
DCF's abuse hot line received a report about the couple on Friday, and police were notified/, said a police spokesman.
Torres, the school's principal, declined to discuss Hernandez's arrest with a reporter Tuesday. ''It's currently under investigation, and I'm not at liberty to say anything,'' she said.
Though the school identifies itself as a Catholic private school in state Department of Education records, Our Lady of Charity is not affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, said Mary Ross Agosta, a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Miami.
Cheryl Etters, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, said the state has not received any complaints about the school, which accepts students from pre-kindergarten through grade nine.

Woman Charged With Hurling Baby in Car Seat at Wal-Mart Employee

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Police have charged a woman who they say used a child car seat with a 2-month-old infant inside to hit a Wal-Mart employee.
Detective Monique Martin said in a news release Monday that Camilla Fields of Memphis, Tenn., was charged with felony child abuse and neglect and assault. Police did not know if she had an attorney.
A police report from the Wednesday incident says Fields was carrying the car seat when she was confronted by a security guard about shoplifting.
Police say Fields threw the seat and ran away, causing the baby to land face down on the pavement. A paramedic treated the baby until the child regained consciousness.
The child's mother, Stacey Cleaves, was also charged with false reporting and child neglect

The Dallas Morning News reports that the consultant, Jeffrey Lawrence Galland, was engineering director of a Las Vegas company called JCI even though he had no engineering license.
Galland, 42, said JCI president Scott Jacobs, who is a licensed engineer, supervised his Cowboys work.
The Cowboys declined to comment.

SEATTLE—Mary Kay Letourneau and her former sixth-grade student -- the father of her two youngest children -- are hosting a "Hot for Teacher" night at a Seattle nightclub. Letourneau, now 47, served 7 1/2 years in prison after she was convicted of raping Vili Fualaau, now 26. They were married four years ago this week.

The bar's owner said Letourneau has served her sentence, she's married her former student, and it's OK for them to have some fun on a Saturday night.
Mike Morris, owner of Fuel Sports Eats & Beats, said this is the third time Letourneau and Fualaau have hosted a "Hot for Teacher" night at the nightclub. The event begins at 9:30 p.m. Saturday.
The couple first met when Fualaau was in the second grade. Their relationship became sexual when he was 12 and she was a 34-year-old married mother of four.

MAY 18--Meet Danica Wallace and Jeremy Welch. The Ohio couple was arrested Friday after cops spotted them having sex in a car while Welch's two small children were in the vehicle's back seat. According to a Springfield Police Department report, Wallace, age 24, was driving a Ford Taurus when she and Welch, 29, "pulled off the roadway to have sex."

When police approached the vehicle, they discovered Wallace, naked from the waist down, astride a similarly pantsless Welch, who was seated in the front passenger seat.

Welch, who was "extremely intoxicated," offered cops a simple explanation for the pair's conduct: "We got horny and just wanted to fuck!!"

Wallace, who failed a series of field sobriety tests, claimed to have only consumed a 22-ounce bottle of Budweiser. "I'm not completely drunk," she assured police.

Study Finds Why Some Men Are 'Chubby Chasers'

Describe the perfect woman. Is she blonde, or brunette? Petite, or tall? Slender — or fat?
For a certain subset of the male population — referred to in the scientific community as "fat admirers" (FAs)— overweight women are the ideal.
And a recent study, published in The Journal of Sex Research, finds that not only do FAs prefer overweight women, but that they also find a wider range of body sizes attractive than other men do.

The study asked two groups of men — those who were scouted at FA events, and those who did not identify with the subculture — to rate black-and-white photographs of 10 female body types.
Both groups were asked which figure they desired the most, as well as the largest and thinnest figures that they found attractive.

The FAs were most attracted to the photo of a woman with a body mass index of 29.24.
BMIs are computed by dividing weight in kilograms by height in meters squared; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a body mass index of 25 to 29.9 qualifies a person as overweight, while those who are obese have a BMI of 30 or higher.
For example, a 5’6” woman at 155 pounds is overweight, and is obese at 190 pounds. (To find your BMI using metric measurements, use the CDC’s calculator.
Furthermore, the study found that FAs considered a wider range of figures to be appealing, including those of two emaciated women (with BMIs lower than 15).

Viren Swami, a psychology professor at England's University of Westminster and a lead researcher on the study, says that these findings suggest a rejection of the "sociocultural norms of attractiveness."
"Most [FAs] understand that their ideals of beauty are not 'mainstream,' but I don't think it's really perceived as something rebellious," Swami told LiveScience. "'Natural' is a word that often crept up in my conversations with FAs, i.e., they viewed their preferences as normal; it was just that mainstream society didn't 'accept' those ideals."
The control group, meanwhile, supported those conventional ideals, finding the figure with a BMI of 18.45 — which, technically, qualifies as underweight — the most attractive. They also rated the overweight and obese images more negatively overall than the FAs did.
FAs might be fighting stereotypes, but do they concern themselves with the weight-related health issues that come along with that resistance?
"For some, [health] didn't matter," Swami says. "Others are more strongly involved with fat acceptance movements, and are trying to redefine what is meant by 'healthy.'"
Obesity as healthy? Fat chance.

Google Gets Goats to Mow Lawn at Company Headquarters

Last week, Google brought in a herd of goats to mow the grass on its Mountain View, Calif. headquarters rather than using lawnmowers.
The company said that it wanted to take a more "low-carbon" approach with the goats reducing the company's contribution to air and noise pollution.
The cost of hiring the 200-some goats is about the same price as mowing, but the goats were "a lot cuter to watch."
PETA responded to a TechCrunch call about the goats, saying that though they have no problem with letting goats do what they do, they do have concerns about how they were transported and whether they have enough shelter and water.
Google said that though the goats were not technically employees, "each goat is entitled to a free organic lunch."

BANGOR, Maine — A British woman allegedly had an in-flight meal of prescription drugs, wine and liquid soap — before trying to bite the crew of a London-bound jetliner.
Galina Rusanova punched and kicked flight attendants on the Chicago-based United Airlines flight after downing two or three bottles of wine, prescription drugs and liquid soap from the jet's lavatory, prosecutors said.
As the scuffle escalated, Rusanova snapped "like a dog" while trying to bite an attendant, prosecutors said.
The FBI said the Russian-born London resident had gone to Los Angeles to visit a man she met over the Internet and was returning Wednesday when her flight was diverted to Bangor.
Rusanova appeared in U.S. District Court for a detention hearing there Monday, where she's charged with assault and interference with a flight crew.
No one answered the phone at defense lawyer Matthew Erickson's office.

Saudi Arabia clamps down on unlicensed female gyms

JEDDAH (Reuters) – "Let her get fat!" is the slogan women in Saudi Arabia are using to challenge a clampdown on female-only gyms.
Unhappy at the growing number of unlicensed female gyms, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs recently closed two in the Red Sea city of Jeddah and one in the city of Dammam on the Gulf Arab coast for not having a license.
In response, newspaper columnists and bloggers are promoting the sarcastic line "let her get fat!" as a way of fighting back, though it is likely to be a losing battle.
In Saudi Arabia, where clerics have extensive influence in society, gyms are sexually segregated because of conservative tribal and religious values.
Female participation in sports has long been a controversial issue in the kingdom, with physical education banned from public girls' schools and clerics issuing religious prohibitions on female participation in sports.
While male gyms get licenses from a government sports body, female gyms have no official authority overseeing them.
"The idea of female fitness is non-existent within our government," said Fouziah Alouni, a prominent women's rights campaigner.
"Depriving women of this is yet another way of marginalizing them. Give us a justifiable reason or leave woman alone. This is unbearable."
The result has been high rates of diabetes and even bone frailty among women, which the Ministry of Health says it wants to combat.
"Football and basketball are sports that require a lot of movement and jumping," Sheikh Abdullah al-Maneea, member of the official Supreme Council of Religious Scholars, said in a religious opinion published in Okaz newspaper Thursday.
He said such excessive movement may harm girls who are still virgins, possibly causing them to lose their virginity.
"There is a school of thought that unfortunately exists and which has a distorted interpretation of Islam," said Lina Al-Maeena, who organises basketball training in Jeddah.
Women's gyms can only exist inside hospitals as "health centres" supervised by the Ministry of Health but prices are so high, at least 1,000 riyals ($266) a month, that only the affluent can afford membership.
Cheaper versions have sprung up under name "beauty salon" or "studio" but now their future is in doubt.
Madawi Al-Hassoun of the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce said the chamber has been trying for three years to find a government body prepared to take on board licensing female gyms.
"Some people don't like women to go out of their homes. This is a common struggle for female businesses in Saudi," she said.

Hunter Arrested In Blind Pig Slaying

HONOLULU -- A hunter has been arrested for allegedly stabbing to death a blind pet pig at an animal shelter in Hawaii Kai.
The slaughtered 6-month-old pig was named Keller, after Helen Keller, and belonged to Hawaii Animal Sanctuary, which cares for abused, abandoned, disabled and sick animals.
Witnesses say a group of hunters drove up on a private road, set loose a pack of hunting dogs that mauled the pig before one of the hunters stabbed it to death.
The sanctuary is operated by Gary Weller and Gina Lay.
Lay said Keller has only known human kindness so he wasn't prepared for what happened to him.

Police: hooker turned tricks while son, 7, watched

A 36-year-old woman who was arrested on charges of prostitution sometimes turned tricks in a filthy Bucks County motel room while her 7-year-old son watched, officials say.

Authorities said Catherine Thomas kept her son locked in the shower in her room at the Mall Motel on Lincoln Highway near the Neshaminy Mall in Bensalem while she entertained men.

Bensalem Public Safety Director Fred Harran said the boy prayed "to ask God for forgiveness for what he saw his mother did."

Thomas was arrested after she offered to have sex for $130 with an undercover officer of the Bensalem Special Victim's Unit.

Officers found the boy in the bathroom. Three dogs also were living in the room, police said.

Thomas was ordered held on $20,000 bail yesterday on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, prostitution and possession of marijuana.

The boy was placed in the custody of the Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency. The dogs were taken to a shelter for evaluation.

FORT PIERCE — A 26-year-old man accused of stabbing another man after that man let his girlfriend use the alleged stabber's bathroom is facing a felony charge, according to an arrest affidavit released Monday.
Juan Diaz, of the 600 block of Texas Court, was arrested on an aggravated battery with a deadly weapon charge in connection with the 3:36 a.m. Saturday incidents.
The victim told police that he and his girlfriend went to Diaz's home. When the girlfriend headed to the restroom, Diaz ”got upset at him for letting her use his bathroom” and stabbed the victim's arm and face.
The victim, who had a small cut on the face and a big slash on his right arm, tried to use a plastic chair to defend himself and took the knife from Diaz.
Diaz, who also had a stab wound to his arm, said the victim cut him. Diaz explained that when he drinks with his friends he's not allowed to speak about what happens.
Asked about the cuts on the victim, Diaz said the victim must have cut himself and blamed it on Diaz.
The victim's girlfriend said Diaz made a derogatory comment to her as she left the bathroom and said, [open quote]”I'm next,”[close quote] the affidavit states.
She left and didn't see the confrontation.

Man Falls Urinating Off Highway 77 Bridge
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (WCCO) ―

A man who was attempting to urinate off of the Highway 77 bridge in Bloomington, Minn. was hurt after falling off the edge.
Police got a call just before 5 a.m. Sunday from a 21-year-old man who said his friend fell off the Highway 77 bridge and into a marshy area about 30 feet below.The caller said he was driving north when his 23-year-old friend, who he said had been drinking, told him to pull into the bridge's emergency lane so he could urinate.
The man looked at his friend and pretended to fall off the bridge before actually falling off for real, landing about 30 feet below in a grassy area.The Eagan Fire Department retrieved the man using a chair lift. He was then taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he is currently in stable condition with serious injuries.Police did not provide the man's identity.

The victim received multiple cuts to her face that were treated at a local hospital with seven staples, police said. She has refused to discuss the incident with detectives.

A 52-year-old woman who took a job as an exotic dancer to help make ends meet was attacked on her first day by a jealous co-worker armed with a stiletto shoe, police said.
The altercation occurred Friday night at Club 1245 at 1245 E. Tallmadge Ave., according to Akron police.

The parents of two young girls say their daughters walked into a downtown restaurant bathroom and saw four people having sex. Their parents are so disturbed, they want all parents to be aware.
"They saw two women servicing two men in the restroom," Robert Schumann says. "Eleven years old is still not old enough to learn about such things as that."
"My 11-year-old asked me, 'How come two women were coming out of the bathroom and why were two guys in there?’ Melissa Schumann, the girls’ mother, says. ‘And they were making funny noises.'"
The Schumann’s contacted the managers at Taco Bell and suggested they lock the doors.
"She turned around and told me they used to lock the bathrooms because of this very issue but she was told to keep them unlocked because of all the complaints they got about the doors being locked," Robert says.
Taco Bell Spokesperson, Rob Poetsch, sent a statement that reads:
“The safety of our customers is our number one priority, and although this is an isolated incident, we’re having self-locking doors installed as a precautionary measure.”
Newscenter 16 went into the Taco Bell Thursday and found a note on the bathroom doors asking customers to get a key from the counter and lock the door behind them. But we were able to walk into the women’s room without a key. Once we spoke to a manager, she locked the doors right in front of us.
"It's scary because now I don't want to send my children to the bathroom by themselves and my 11-year-old doesn't want to be treated like a child,” Melissa explains. “She wants to feel grown up. I can't do that now."
"I was fuming. I was angry. I was upset. I was concerned," Robert says. He is pleased now the restaurant is taking action and installing locks to prevent people from wandering in.
South Bend police say public sex happens very often and in many places. They say they’ve gotten calls from this Taco Bell before, as well as other fast food restaurants, bars, cars, parks and almost any public place. But police say by the time they arrive, those having sex are either gone or not committing the act anymore.
Still, the Schumanns never thought having lunch at noon on a Saturday would turn so disturbing.
"We see police there all the time...eating there. And I figure, all right, police have made themselves known there so it should be relatively safe,” Melissa explains. “Nothing can really happen here. Oh, I was so wrong. I was so wrong."

McDonald's golden arches topple in Arizona high winds, crush Naperville couple

A giant set of golden arches outside a McDonald’s in eastern Arizona toppled in high winds Wednesday, crushing a Naperville couple’s Chevy Trailblazer as they sat inside the parked vehicle.
Retirees Russell and Carolyn Janke suffered multiple injuries. They had stopped at the McDonald’s on the Navajo Nation reservation in Window Rock as they were making their way back to suburban Chicago from their winter home near Tucson.
Navajo acting Police Chief Steven Nelson said winds hit 60 mph Wednesday, causing the sign to be blown down from atop a pole across the street from the restaurant.
“It was a freak accident,’’ Nelson said.
Carolyn Janke, 68, was trapped inside the SUV and had to be cut out of the vehicle by rescue crews, Nelson said.
Both were taken to the Fort Defiance Indian Health Service. Carolyn Janke was later transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix — about six hours from Window Rock — where she remained in intensive care Thursday, her daughter-in-law, Ann Janke, told the Chicago Sun-Times.
Carolyn Janke, who was knocked unconscious, has a fractured spinalcolumn and a fractured sternum, her daughter-in-law said. Russell Janke, 70, a retired engineer, was hit in the head and “has over 70 stitches,” she said.
Ann Janke said she’s desperately trying to get more information about the accident.
“How could that sign not be properly secured? That’s what I want to know,” she said. “I’m mad. You don’t think you park under a sign . . . and giant golden arches are going to come smashing down on you.”
Roy Talker, the owner of the Window Rock franchise, issued a statement Thursday, saying, “We are genuinely concerned about the recovery of those involved. We are fully cooperating with the authorities on their investigation.”
Talker also said, “Without having all the facts, it would be inappropriate to speculate on what may have happened.”
Nelson said the incident was still under investigation but said,“We have not had any reports of any problems with the sign.’’
But Richardson Laughing, who works nearby, said he has been worried about the sign toppling for a while.
“I’ve been working here two years and I’ve seen it blow back and forth in the wind,’’ Laughing told the Navajo Times newspaper. “I’ve been saying to my wife that it’s going to blow over sometime.’’

United will now implement new policies for passengers they deem to be overweight. Under the rules outlined by United, passengers who "are unable to fit into a single seat in the ticketed cabin; are unable to properly buckle the seatbelt using a single seatbelt extender; and/or are unable to put the seat's armrests down when seated" will be denied boarding unless they purchase an extra seat.If no empty seat exists, the passenger will be forced to take a later flight. "The seat purchase or upgrade must be completed for each leg of the itinerary," the United policy states. High-speed sex costly in Norway

A man faces a hefty fine and a driving ban after being caught having sex with his girlfriend while speeding on a motorway in Norway, police have said.
Officers initially trailed the couple's car after noticing it was swerving from side to side and travelling at 33km/h (20mph) over the road's speed limit.
But they soon realised the erratic driving was due to the woman "sitting on the man's lap", a spokesman said.
After filming the exploit for evidence, they pulled them over at a rest area.
The 28-year-old man's punishment will be decided within the next week, but police said he was likely to face a fine of several thousand Norwegian kroner and a lengthy driving ban.
"Why they did it on a highway with such a high risk we don't know," Tor Stein Hagen, a superintendent with Soendre Buskerud Police District, told the AFP news agency.

A man who taught in Murfreesboro and Metro city schools has been arrested on charges he’s been secretly taping teenagers having sex in his house.
According Metro police, Louis Jay Levine was arrested this morning by sex crimes detectives on federal charges of producing child pornography.
Levine, 52, was a science teacher in Murfreesboro City Schools and an occasional substitute teacher at Metro Nashville Public Schools. He was placed on administrative leave April 1 in Murfreesboro and taken off the substitute list at Metro, according to police and school officials.
According to police, Levine had an outbuilding where teenagers were given marijuana and alcohol and had sex. Levine had an elaborate monitoring system with cameras installed in the outbuilding as well as other rooms in the main house on Alton Road, according to police.
Also in the home was a room with a waterbed with a wooden box over it that was wired for videotaping, police said.
Hundreds of homemade videotapes were recovered from his bedroom. Teenagers interviewed by police who spent time at Levine’s house said they didn’t know they were being videotaped. According to police, people who were teenagers as far back as the 1980s told police they engaged in similar activity at Levine’s house. A neighbor said Levine had only lived in the Alton Road address for about eight to 10 years. The house once belonged to his parents and Levine moved into that house after his parents died, the neighbor said.
Levine is being charged federally under a provision for interstate and foreign commerce, because the video camera and tapes he used were made in Japan, according to federal prosecutors.

Student Kicked Off Bus Over Passed Gas

This whole situation stinks for Jonathan Locke Jr., an eighth-grader at the Bill Duncan Excel Center in South Lakeland. Locke, 15, has been suspended from riding the school bus for three days after being accused of passing gas.
"Jonathan passes gas on the bus to make the other children laugh and it is so stink [sic] that you can't breathe after he does it," the bus driver wrote on a misbehavior form.
Locke said he wasn't the culprit.
"It wasn't even me," Locke said. "It was a kid who sits in front of me."
Jerome Corbett, senior director of specialized services for the Polk County School District, said there is no specific rule that prohibits students from passing gas on the bus.
"There's a rule against disturbing the bus," Corbett said.
If the flatulence becomes excessive, then Corbett said the bus driver has the responsibility to report it to the school administrator.
Fred Murphy, assistant superintendent of support services, directed calls to Corbett but said that "if it (passing gas) caused a disruption on the bus, that would be an issue to deal with."
Trouble for Locke started Monday afternoon after school when a student sitting next to him started making noises with his mouth.
Then, students smelled a pungent aroma.
"I started laughing," Locke said. "It was a bad smell."
On Tuesday when Locke walked onto the bus, the bus driver handed him the suspension form.
Locke said he chuckled.
"I asked, 'What is this for?'"
The bus driver ordered Locke off the bus.
Locke exited the bus, then called his father for a ride home.
The last-minute notification that his son had been suspended for three days irked Locke's father, also named Jonathan.
"I had no notice about anything," Locke said. "It's costing me time (at work)."
Corbett said the district notifies parents but was unaware whether parents were notified after the misbehavior report was written.
Bill Duncan school officials directed calls to Jose Otero, director of operations for Bill Duncan. Otero did not return a phone message.
Locke was sent to Bill Duncan after he was expelled from Mulberry Middle School for fighting. Bill Duncan is a last-chance school for students. Students who are expelled from Bill Duncan are expelled from the district school system.
The elder Locke said the whole situation seemed petty.
You're not going to stop a kid from laughing if it's (about) passing gas," Locke said.

Attempt to ensnare boyfriend comes back to bite Indiana woman

Concerned that an ex-boyfriend had used her laptop to search for child pornography, the Indiana woman asked police to search the computer for illegal images, but had her plan backfire when cops discovered two videos of her engaged in illicit acts with a dog. Owen, 24, was charged last week with two felony bestiality counts in connection with the video files, which a detective found in the laptop's "recycle bin." At the time Owen asked cops to search the computer, she was locked up in the Johnson County Jail on a public intoxication charge (which violated the terms of her release in a prior drunk driving case). According to a police affidavit , a copy of which you'll find here , a cop told Owen that he had found videos of her on the laptop and asked if she "knew what those files might be." Owen, pictured in the mug shot, replied, "The one with the dog." Cops believe that the dog in question, Toby, is a beagle. After asking if she was "going to be charged with this," Owen said that the videos "were just something she did when she was drunk and barely remembers it," adding that she tried to "delete them the next day when she was sober."

Three global warming researchers stranded in the North Pole by cold weather were holding out hope Wednesday as a fourth plane set off in an attempt deliver them supplies.
The flight took off during a break in bad weather after “brutal” conditions halted three previous attempts to reach the British explorers who said they were nearly out of food, the Agence France-Presse reported.
“We’re hungry, the cold is relentless, our sleeping bags are full of ice,” expedition leader Pen Hadow said in e-mailed statement. “Waiting is almost the worst part of an expedition as we’re in the lap of the weather gods.”
Hadow, Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels began an 85-day hike to the North Pole on February 28 to measure sea ice thickness, the AFP reported.
With bad weather hampering supply flights, the team is was down to half-rations, battling desperate sub-zero temperatures and unable to proceed, the AFP reported.
"It'll be a relief to get our new supplies," Hadow said in a statement Wednesday. "Until (the plane) does arrive, we need to conserve energy and can't really move on."
The expedition now expects to arrive at the North Pole in late May.

Insemination fight ends in wife's arrest

Thursday, March 12PITTSFIELD — A woman who allegedly intended to artificially inseminate her wife with her brother's semen has been charged with domestic assault and battery.
Pittsfield police responded to a call shortly before 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the city's Morningside neighborhood, where the assault allegedly occurred.
Stephanie K. Lighten, 26, was released on personal recognizance after denying the allegations in Central Berkshire District Court Wednesday morning.
Jennifer A. Lighten, 33, told police that Stephanie Lighten, her wife, was "all liquored up" when she returned to their Lincoln Street apartment, where the defendant then allegedly tried to use a syringe to inseminate her, according to a police report.
Jennifer told investigating officers that Stephanie "has been talking about trying to impregnate (her) for some time," police said.
According to a report by Pittsfield Police Officer Kipp D. Steinman: "Jennifer said that Stephanie had a 'turkey baster and her brother's semen in a sealed container.' Jennifer said she told Stephanie that she didn't want to get pregnant." The device was actually a large syringe with a catheter tip, police said, and it was still in its original package when officers confiscated the item.
That's allegedly when Stephanie threw Jennifer on the couch, grabbed at her clothes and threatened to impregnate her, police said.
Jennifer broke free, ran into the bathroom and locked the door. Stephanie "then broke the bathroom door down," police said, hurting her wrist in the process.
When Stephanie went to retrieve an ice pack from the freezer, Jennifer bolted from the apartment and attempted to get away in the couple's sport utility vehicle, police said.
As Jennifer pulled away from the scene, Stephanie "jumped on the side of their vehicle, swung the door open and made (Jennifer) stop," Steinman said.
According to Officer John Bassi, a witness at the scene claimed Stephanie "was hanging on the SUV door handle, trying to get into the car." Amber Hunt told Bassi that Stephanie nearly caused an accident when the vehicle narrowly missed hitting a tree in the front yard of Hunt's Spring Street home.
Police arrested Stephanie Lighten near the intersection of Spring and Curtis streets in Morningside.
Police also confiscated the container of semen and some aluminum foil, which was originally used to hold the semen. Nicholas Lighten, Stephanie Lighten's brother, was the donor, according to police.
Detective Thomas H. Harrington said Jennifer Lighten declined "to go forward with charges of assault with intent to rape" because she did not believe "Stephanie was going to sexually assault her with the syringe." However, Harrington informed the alleged victim that attempted rape charges could be filed if she changes her mind.
Stephanie Lighten was represented by attorney Thomas J. Donahue Jr. at Wednesday's arraignment.
Judge Rita S. Koenigs ordered Lighten to "refrain from abuse" and to return to court for an April 29 pretrial hearing.

MARY ESTHER - A brother-and-sister pair was arrested at Club 51 after she put her hands on a dancer, deputies say.

The 39-year-old woman and her 45-year-old brother were arrested at about 4 a.m. Sunday outside the adult club, after scuffling with security, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. She was charged with misdemeanor battery while he was charged with misdemeanor battery, assault, possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Staff had told the woman to leave after she touched a dancer, deputies said. That irked her, and she resisted as a staff member picked her up under her arms, carried her to the exit and offered her a cab ride.

It upset her brother, too, who came after the guard carrying his sister with his fist clenched. The guard kicked him in the chest, knocking him down before he could punch - but the woman punched the guard in the nose and broke it, anyway.

Staff eventually let the brother get up, but then he punched another staff member. Meanwhile, the sister punched yet another staff member before the first guard grabbed her hair and pulled her to the ground.

Both siblings were on the ground when sheriff's deputies arrived.

The brother had two sandwich bags of marijuana and paraphernalia in his pocket, according to the report. Deputies said both he and his sister were drunk.

She is from Navarre. He is from Batesville, Ark.

Two lovers had a brush with death after their car plunged 46m down a cliff, while they were having sex in the back seat.

According to the police Lin Gu, 25, and lover Lee Shin, 29, suffered broken bones when their car tipped over the edge of the hill in XinDian, Taiwan.

"They had parked up close to the edge of the mountain and had left the handbrake off," Daily Telegraph quoted a spokesman, as saying.

For 40 years, Meredith Smith brought the Fourth of July to the sky over the Northside of Indianapolis. He and his wife, Charlotte, did it as a community service.

In February, he died at age 74.

Tonight, a little bit of Meredith Smith will burst over the White River as this year's finale, the community's way of giving something back to the school maintenance man who was a trained pyrotechnician.

About a half-teaspoon of his ashes are inside a shell that will punctuate the night with a white burst. (Indiana law allows cremated remains to be disposed of on property of a consenting owner, uninhabited public land or in a waterway.)

"Meredith felt like the people in this area didn't get the opportunities that other people got, and so he wanted to give them the opportunity, Charlotte Smith told The Indianapolis Star (a Gannett paper). "Sometimes, we took the money out of our own pocket."

Residents donated more than $10,000 for tonight's display. They'll also be decked out in T-shirts memorializing "the last shot."

Dog sex tapes lead to arrests

TULSA — A woman who was charged with committing felony crimes against nature was arrested this morning after police were notified of more than 150 homemade movies of the Tulsa County woman engaging in various sex acts with dogs.

Donald Roy Seigfried, 55 and Diane Sue Whalen, 54, were charged with the crime, which deals with bestiality.

Whalen, 54, was arrested this morning and booked into the Tulsa County Jail.

Seigfried, whom police describe as her partner in the movie productions, was arrested and released on a $10,000 bond Tuesday.

Authorities were notified of the tapes after Whalen’s son accidentally stumbled onto one of the movies and then alerted the sheriff's department.

The tapes, along with three dogs -- a Labrador, a blue heeler and a mixed breed -- were also taken into custody. Bowman said his office is recommending that they be taken away from the suspects and be put down.

MAY 28--Meet Megan Douglas. The Florida woman, 18, had just finished having sex with a guy in her Toyota Highlander when the vehicle ran off a highway Friday night and struck a road sign and a concrete utility pole. Responding to the crash scene, St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office deputies found an allegedly tipsy Douglas and her male paramour naked, according to a police report. Douglas explained that she had just had sex with passenger Robert Van Hooser Jr., 27, "but not while the vehicle was in motion." Douglas, who smelled of booze and had slurred speech, claimed that she had only consumed three or four beers before the accident. When a search of her purse turned up a marijuana stash, Douglas, pictured in the mug shot, admitted that she "deals it." Charged with drunk driving and pot possession, Douglas was briefly jailed before posting $13,500 bond. Van Hooser, an Indian River Community College student, was not charged for his role in the vehicular frolic.

Conservative grassroots group Grassfire.org wants people to waste as much energy as possible on June 12 by "hosting a barbecue, going for a drive, watching television, leaving a few lights on, or even smoking a few cigars."

The point: the group wants to "help Americans break free from the 'carbon footprint guilt' being imposed by Climate Alarmists."

Grassfire.org says it's skeptical over claims that man-made sources of carbon dioxide emissions -- from automobile exhausts to manufacturing plants -- are raising the Earth's temperature at a dangerous rate. Theories about global warming were highlighted by former Vice President Al Gore's 2006 film, An Inconvenient Truth.

Grassfire.org president Steve Elliott, in a statement, said such theories are off the mark. "It's time for Americans to purge ourselves of the false guilt that Al Gore and the Climate Alarmists have placed on us," Elliott said.

Grassfire.org said it chose June 12 as the day it wants Americans to rev up their SUVs because it coincides with expected debate in Congress over a $1.2 billion carbon tax rebate program. "Carbon Belch Day will have at least as much impact on the so-called 'planetary emergency' of man-made global warming as the goofy save the earth mandates telling us to turn our lights off for an hour," said Elliott.

They used an IR camera on the chopper to find the guy. A man who was wearing only a wrist watch and flip-flops when he was taken into custody late Sunday after a helicopter search in Lower Swatara Township, Dauphin County, is a pilot for Pinnacle Airlines Inc., township police said. Jeffrey Paul Bradford, 24, who listed an address of Moon Twp. in suburban Pittsburgh, was arraigned today before District Judge Michael Smith on charges of indecent exposure, open lewdness, public drunkeness, loitering and prowling at night and disorderly conduct. Adrianna Grace Connor, 24, of Belleville, Mich., who police said is a flight attendant for the airline, was arraigned on charges of theft from a motor vehicle, public drunkeness and loitering and prowling at night.

Smith set bail for both suspects at $10,000. A preliminary hearing is set for May 30 at 2 p.m.

Police were called to the 100 block of Richardson Road around 9:30 p.m. Sunday after township Fire Chief Robert Furlong heard noises outside his home and found an intoxicated woman inside the department's Chevrolet Tahoe, arrest documents state.

That woman, later identified as Connor, was holding a flashlight that belongs to Furlong, police said. Connor, who was described as highly intoxicated, told police there was a man in the woods who was naked.

Minutes later, a woman who lives nearby in the 300 block of Summit Ridge called 911 to report a naked man came out from behind her parked car and asked her for a pair of shorts, police said.

Police said they found Bradford a few minutes later hiding behind a shed.

Officials from Pinnacle Airlines could not be reached for comment. During Bradford's arraignment, he told the judge he'd been a pilot for Pinnacle for 3½ years. Connor told the judge she'd worked for the airline for about a year.

HARTMAN — A Johnson County 12-year-old now holds the distinction of being one of the youngest Arkansans to face a charge of driving while under the influence.

County prosecutor Bruce Wilson said Friday that he will charge a Hartman preteen with the violation and several other misdemeanor charges in district and juvenile court in Johnson County.

The trouble began when the boy had a 10-year-old friend sleep over at his home on May 4, Johnson County Sheriff Jimmy Dorney said.

After the parents went to sleep, the boys found some of the adults’ beer and “got liquored up,” Dorney said.

The pair then stole the keys to the 12-year-old’s stepfather’s company-owned pickup, Dorney said, and set out to find a girl they had met at a rodeo.

The boys made it about 10 miles before the 12-year-old lost control of the vehicle and wrecked along Arkansas 352, about one mile from the Johnson-Franklin county line.

The accident happened along a stretch of road in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains near the Dirty Creek overpass. Tire marks show where the truck struck the guardrail and jumped it, then careened 50 feet down a steep hill into a forest. There the truck hit a fence and rolled onto its side.

This week, a headlight was still wrapped in the barb wire of the broken fence. Two bottles of Coors Lite and an empty Cheetos bag sat nearby.

The sheriff’s deputy who responded to the accident estimated that there was at least $ 12, 500 in damage to the truck. He had to call a wrecker to pull it out of the forest.

Clark James, 46, who lives down the road from the accident site, said he answered the boys ’ banging at his front door with shotgun in hand about 2: 30 a. m.

“I opened the door and the first thing [the 12-year-old ] said to me was, ‘I’m drunk and I had a wreck, ’” James said.

“I looked at him and I thought ‘ You’re kind of young to be out drinking. And you sure shouldn’t be driving. ’”

James said he called the police immediately.

The Hartman boy later told a sheriff’s deputy that he had two or three drinks. His eyes were red, bloodshot and glassy, Dorney said.

The 10-year-old was bleeding, James said, and the 12-year-old complained of chest pain. Neither of the boys was seriously injured, however.

Paramedics took the pair to Johnson Regional Medical Center, where nurses drew blood to test blood-alcohol content. The test results were not released Friday.

The 12-year-old was not arrested that night because of his age, Dorney said.

But he will be charged with driving under the influence in addition to careless driving, driving with no license, driving with no seat belt and the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle — all misdemeanors, Dorney said.

The 10-year-old will face a misdemeanor charge of public intoxication.

News reports suggest the Hartman boy isn’t the youngest in the nation to face DUI charges.

The Associated Press reported that an 11-year-old was charged with DUI in July 2007 after leading Alabama police on an eightmile chase at speeds up to 100 miles per hour.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A picture of an overweight woman lying naked on a couch, painted by the British artist Lucian Freud, set a record Tuesday night for the most money paid for any work by a living artist.

The 1995 life-size painting -- "Benefits Supervisor Sleeping" -- fetched $33.6 million during bidding at Christie's auction house in New York. The previous record was for "Hanging Heart," a painting by Jeff Koons that sold for $23.5 million, said Rik Pike, a spokesman for Christie's.
Freud's painting depicts Sue Tilley, a manager of a government-run job center in London, lying on her side on a worn-out couch with nothing to hide her folds of flesh.
Christie's calls it a "bold and imposing example of the stark power of Lucian Freud's realism," depicting "the forceful and undeniable physical presence of people and things."
Tilley, now 51, told CNN she was initially embarrassed to pose naked for the artist but soon grew comfortable in the studio -- so comfortable, in fact, that she confessed to falling asleep while posing.
"I didn't mind if he noticed," she said.
The painting challenges modern notions of beauty and elicits a reaction from everyone who sees it. That may have been precisely the aim of Freud, who told London's Tate Gallery in 2002 that he wanted his paintings to "astonish, disturb, seduce, convince."
Though some regard the painting as shocking -- ugly, even -- that is also the appeal for collectors, said Michael Hall, editor of Apollo Magazine in London.
"There's a reaction against art that's regarded as too pretty," he said.
Hall said a more conventionally beautiful painting would not be able to fetch such a large amount.

"It's the sort of thing that everyone immediately wants to voice an opinion about," he said of the painting. "It challenges conventional taste ... and people do find that rather exciting and interesting to talk about."
Collectors may also view this as a rare chance to buy something by a prolific artist painted at the peak of his work, he said.
Freud, 85, has been described as Britain's greatest living realist painter. He is the grandson of psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud and came to London from Germany when he was a child.
With Tilley, Freud said he was "very aware of all kinds of spectacular things to do with her size, like amazing craters and things one's never seen before," according to the 2002 interview with the Tate. He added: "I have perhaps a predilection towards people of unusual or strange proportions, which I don't want to over-indulge."
Freud painted the portrait of Tilley over nine months in 1995. Tilley said she posed for eight hours a day, two or three days a week.
Tilley said Freud initially paid her £20 ($31) a day for posing, and the fee later went up to £33 ($51) a day.
She had been introduced to the artist through a mutual friend, Australian performance artist Leigh Bowery, who also posed for Freud. It was Bowery's idea for Tilley to work with Freud, so he arranged a meeting.
Tilley knew the meeting was more of an interview for the job of Freud's muse, and she didn't find out until later -- through Bowery -- that she'd gotten the job, she said.
"Lucian just said to Leigh, 'Oh, tell Sue she can start next week," Tilley said.
Tilley still works full-time at the job center in London's West End and calls her new-found fame "a bit bizarre." She laughs as she describes how she now has to arrange her schedule to accommodate media interviews.
She said she was excited to find out how much the painting sold for, but knowing it could set a record was "a bit scary."
"It's hard to put your head around it, really," she said. "But it's all good."

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - It's a happy Mother's Day for an Arkansas woman — she's pregnant with her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar, 41, is due on New Year's Day, and the latest addition will join seven sisters and 10 brothers. There are two sets of twins.

"We've had three in January, three in December. Those two months are a busy time for us," she said, laughing.

The Duggars' oldest child, Josh, is 20, and the youngest, Jennifer, is nine months old.

The fast-growing family lives in Tontitown in northwest Arkansas in a 7,000-square-foot home. All the children — whose names start with the letter J — are home-schooled.

TAMPA — Stephanie Ragusa, the teacher who smiled in mug shots after being accused of having sex with two male students, feared ending up in jail in an orange jumpsuit.

She said so to one of the boys in a recorded phone call March 12, a day before she was charged with having sex with him three times during the 2006-07 school year.

"Well, like, what exactly that we did was wrong, though?" he asked.

"It's illegal," she said.

Later, she added, "It's kind of like one of those things you have to take to the grave."

A transcript of the 17-minute phone call, set up by Hillsborough detectives, became public Thursday along with further details gathered during the investigation into Ragusa's actions.

Her attorney, Robert Herce, failed to convince a judge this week that releasing the contents of the call to news outlets would prevent his client from getting a fair trial. He did not return a call for comment Thursday.

During the call, Ragusa said she disagreed with society's views on such a relationship. But she knew her friends and family wouldn't approve.

"It's like a real old guy going after really young girls, you know?" Ragusa said. "It's creepy. That's what they would see it as."

Authorities say the boy in the phone call was one of Ragusa's seventh-grade students at Davidsen Middle School. He was 14 when they met. She was 27.

He pushed her around school in a wheelchair after she hurt her foot. One day, he said, she told him she could break his shyness. She took him that afternoon to her apartment, where they had sex, he said.

The other two sexual encounters took place in her Lexus sport utility vehicle, the last time after a school dance on May 4, 2007.

Maribel DeLeon remembers Ragusa showing up that night at her eighth-grade daughter's after-party in a miniskirt and tank top. DeLeon's husband made Ragusa pour out her wine cooler before coming inside. She introduced herself as a teacher, then hung out with students until the party ended at 2 a.m.

"I immediately thought that something was going on with her and some students, but because I didn't see it myself, I didn't say anything," DeLeon said Thursday.

Authorities didn't learn anything was amiss until this March, when a student alerted Davidsen officials that Ragusa had been sexually involved with students.

The male victim in the recorded phone call initially denied that anything inappropriate had occurred but recanted when asked to write a statement.

By then, Ragusa had transferred to Martinez Middle School but was on medical leave.

During a March 13 interview with detectives, she denied any sexual activity with her students.

Her live-in boyfriend had warned her not to choose teaching as a profession because of allegations like these, she said.

Ragusa waited for her boyfriend to go to sleep March 12 before she returned a call to the teenager, who had left her text messages and a voice mail under the direction of detectives.

The teen pushed her to acknowledge details of their encounters. She said she was trying to watch a movie and never spoke specifics.

When pressed, she said her involvement with the teen had been "fun."

But she warned him of the consequences if people found out. There was no statute of limitations for crimes involving children, she said. And if she got locked up and then something happened to her father, she worried that her disabled brother would be all alone.

"It's no joke, I'm telling you, either end," she said. "I don't want to wear an orange jumpsuit, and … you couldn't leave your house without someone trying to shove a camera in your face."

Ragusa remains jailed — wearing an orange jumpsuit — on multiple counts of lewd or lascivious battery and unlawful sexual activity with a minor. Authorities say she also had sex about 20 times with a different teenage boy, including an encounter after her first two arrests.

In mid March, a teacher at Davidsen confiscated a note from students that suggested there were more victims, reports show. But none of the students in the note admitted having sex with Ragusa.

Asked by the boy on the recorded call if she had sex with any other students, Ragusa said no.

School challenge: Transgender student is age 9

For school officials in Haverford Township, the challenge was daunting: What do you do when a 9-year-old student, with the full support of his parents, decides that he is no longer a boy and instead is a girl?

Parents of a third-grade student at Chatham Park Elementary School approached the administration on April 16 to ask for help in making a "social transition" for their child.

The Haverford School District consulted experts on transgender children, then sent letters to parents advising them that the guidance counselor would meet with the school's 100 third-grade students to explain why their classmate would now wear girls' clothes and be called by a girl's name.

Some parents objected. Eight called the principal to ask that their child not attend the session, and some posted angry messages on the Haverford Township blog.

"Why is the school introducing this subject to 8- and 9-year-olds?" wrote the parent who started the blog thread, which had been viewed more than 3,000 times as of yesterday. "Why were we not notified sooner. We received the letter today, the discussion at school is tomorrow."

Other parents thought the school should not have called attention to an already delicate situation.

"I did not think that the letter needed to go out," said Valerie Huff, whose daughter is friends with the transgender student. "The kids don't make any big deal about it at all."

Mary Beth Lauer, district director of community relations, said there were no easy answers for school officials.

"This is something that was going to come out," Lauer said. "Isn't it better to be proactive, and let people know what is happening and how we're dealing with it?"

The student has not received medical treatments to change his sex, but has told others that he considers himself a girl, according to several people who know the family.

He had begun wearing girls' clothes, Huff said, and an approaching school event would have made the child's gender identity an issue, according to Lauer, who declined to discuss the matter in greater detail.

In the April 21 letter to parents, Chatham Park principal Daniel D. Marsella wrote that a transgender child is one whose biological gender does not match his or her gender identity. Marsella assured parents that the talk with students, held two days later, would use "developmentally appropriate language" to explain "how we need to help this student make a social transition in school."

When the guidance counselor, Catherine Mallam, spoke with the children, she explained that one of their classmates looked like a boy on the outside but felt like a girl inside, according to a summary of her remarks prepared by the school for parents. She asked them to accept the student as a girl and not make unkind remarks.

The students seem to be accepting their classmate's change, Lauer said. The child is doing well but some comments on the blog have upset the child's parents, Huff said.

About one in 5,000 people is transgender, said Walter O. Bockting, a psychologist and coordinator for transgender health services at the University of Minnesota. Bockting said he sees about 10 children a year who are 9 or younger.

"It's a little early, but occasionally that happens," he said.

Not all transgender people have sex-reassignment surgery in adulthood, and such surgeries are not typically performed on children, said Sharon Garcia, president of TransYouth Family Allies, a non-profit group that helped the Chatham Park student and school officials devise a way to explain the situation to parents.

So far, 49 families have contacted TransYouth Family Allies asking for help with a transgender child, Garcia said. Most of the children are between 6 and 10.

Parents of transgender children often change school districts in order to accommodate a child's desire to switch genders, which is what Garcia said she did when her 5-year old son tried to hurt himself after professing for years that he was a girl.

"I have yet to meet a parent who did not fight this kicking and screaming," she said. "None of us want this for our children, none of us want to go there, but it gets to the point where it's not a choice anymore."

The child at Chatham Park wanted to stay at the same school because of friends, Garcia said.

Bockting said families of transgender children should consult an expert and carefully consider whether to switch roles before trying it. The child's feelings should be deep and persistent, he said.

When a young child seems set on changing his or her sexual identity, he encourages him or her to wait until puberty.

"Many transgender people have feelings that date to childhood, but puberty will give an idea how strong the feeling is," he said.

Some medical experts think parents should not let a child change gender roles at a young age.

Paul McHugh, a psychiatrist and professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who studied sexual reassignment surgery in the 1970s, said a school's decision to support a student's transition could have long-term psychological consequences.

"They do not have a right to stop the child, but it's different when they gather everyone around and say, 'Johnnie is Jeanie,' " he said. Society, he added, should not support the decision of an immature person.

There is no evidence that the transition ultimately helps the person, he added.

McHugh said he reached his conclusions after studying the issue for 30 years, especially in the 1970s, when Hopkins was pioneering sexual-reassignment surgery.

"People came to us saying that if we changed them, we'd solve all their problems," he said. "So we changed them, and their problems remained."

Garcia says letting her child dress and act as a girl was the right decision.

"I went from a suicidal child to a child who tries out for a lead part in the play," she said. "I knew society wasn't going to be accepting, but my choices were, do this and have a happy, alive girl or have an unhappy, dead boy. So we did what we needed."

Two women report ghost has been having sex with them

The following is a sample from the Federal Way police public information log:

At 4:02 p.m. April 10, two women went into the Federal Way police station claiming that over the past two years, a paranormal person has been placing sensors on their bodies and visiting them in their house at 28600 block of 25th Place South. They said that the ghost has been having sexual intercourse with them. One woman said that these incidents started in Kent and continued when she moved here. The other woman said that this just started now.

At 3:36 p.m. April 12, a woman contacted the Federal Way police to report that a person was cutting a large tree down. She was concerned it could fall on her car or on her house located in the 30800 block of 22nd Avenue South. The woman who was trying to cut the tree was contacted and said that she needed to cut the tree because it was hazard.

At 10:10 a.m. April 11, an unknown person cut the vinyl top of a womans car in the 30800 block of 8th Avenue SW, and gained access to the vehicle. All belongings inside the car had been gone and the total damage for the vehicle was about $1,200.

At 1:18 p.m. April 10, Pro-Act received information about a house in the 29800 block of 4th Avenue SW, that was possibly cultivating marijuana. Police went inside the house with consent. They reported finding more than 60 budding marijuana plants inside one of the rooms. The suspect claimed that he was cultivating plants for medical purposes. The plants were seized and the case is under investigation.

At 9:09 p.m. April 10, a man received a call at his house located in the 33600 block of 38th Avenue South from an unknown business location, asking him why he hadnt paid for a girl on girl porn service from April 9. They also told him that he owed a guy on guy service from Feb. 26. At this point, the man said that he laughed because he thought the call was absurd, but then the person on the line said that it wasnt a joke and that he better pay. The case is under investigation.

At 6:31 a.m. April 7, in the 1900 block of SW 356th Street, two men were strangely wandering around their house. One was wearing a tank top and pants, yelling that he was hearing and seeing things outside. He was saying that people were stealing from him, and was pointing at his garage. Police said that the man appeared to be paranoid and delusional, and that he was living in filth, utilizing the stove as heat. The other man was running around the yard with a hammer.

At 12:52 a.m. April 7, two men got into a fight. One of them punched the other in the nose causing the other to bleed, and eventually retrieved a machete from inside the residence. It appeared that these men had a relationship for over 10 years and were currently residing together in the 600 block of South 317th Street.

Mom appalled at racy books in store for teens at Alderwood mall

LYNNWOOD -- Marci Milfs went to Urban Outfitters to find clothes for her teenage son.

She was surprised to find sexually charged books that she believes have no place in a clothing store for teens and young adults.

On one end of the spectrum was "Porn for Women," a photo book showing men doing housework. On the other was "Pornogami: A Guide to the Ancient Art of Paper-Folding for Adults," a guide for making anatomically correct artwork.

"When I saw it, I was shocked," Milfs said.

The books are displayed on tables in the Alderwood mall store with other socially and politically irreverent books, such as Stephen Colbert's "I Am America (And So Can You)."

Milfs was so appalled that she is preparing to file a complaint with the city of Lynnwood, and has already aired her frustrations to State Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, and organizations including Morality in Media, Concerned Women of America and the American Family Association.

She also called Urban Outfitters' corporate office in Philadelphia.

"They said they are not sex books or pornography books, but that they are art books and their goals are to support artists," Milfs said.

Urban Outfitters declined to comment on Milfs' concerns.

A woman who answered the phone at the company's corporate office said Urban Outfitters responds only to media inquiries of its choosing and that interview requests must be mailed to corporate headquarters. The Herald did not mail an interview request.

Suggestive advertising is common at shopping centers. For instance, racy ads for perfume often draw complaints from mall customers, Alderwood general manager Jerry Alder said. There's not much the mall can do if the business practices of the stores abide by the law, he said.

"We get a lot of customer contact in the management office," Alder said. "We typically direct them back to the stores."

Smith said her staff brought the issue to the attention of the state attorney general's office, but the state office declined to act against the retailer.

She encouraged Milfs to work with Urban Outfitters to resolve the issue.

"I just hope that (Urban Outfitters) will be sensitive to her concerns, and to take that into account and take a look at who their customer base is," Smith said.

Customers usually know what to expect when they shop at large retailers, because companies often spend years building up their brand images, said Dana Alden, professor of marketing at the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaii.

However, the retail industry has shifted to more of a European style during the past 10 to 15 years, Alden said. Sexual undertones are more prevalent than they used to be in merchandise and advertising, he said.

The societal shift can lead to increased friction between retailers and customers who aren't part of a sought-after target audience, Alden said.

"(Milfs) has the right to not shop in that store, just as someone has the right in cable television not to let their kids have access to certain programming," Alden said. "What may be offensive to one consumer may not be for another."

To shield children from sexually explicit material, several states have laws that require businesses to limit children's access to goods that lack "serious artistic, political, scientific or literary value for minors," said Robert Peters, president of New York-based Morality in Media, a group established in the 1960s to combat pornography.

Washington is behind the times, Peters said. This state's minor-protection law calls for access to be restricted on goods that are "utterly without redeeming social value," but the wording is not followed by "for minors," Peters said.

The vagueness of the state law creates a legal gray area, Peters said. Arguably, an item that is inappropriate for children might be allowable if it's found suitable for adults, he said.

"Even assuming these books don't violate the law, they are not nice books," he said. "If a typical mother invited neighborhood kids over, she wouldn't be leaving these books on her coffee table for the kids to peruse."

Milfs doesn't believe the books should be seen by children.

"It's not freedom of speech," she said. "It's selling adult books to teenagers."

Magic trick costs teacher job

Land 'O Lakes, Florida -- The stories in the news about inappropriate relationships between teachers and students have been overwhelming. There was even a substitute teacher in New Port Richey who got in trouble after investigators say she had a relationship with an underage student.

Well, another Pasco County substitute teacher's job is on the line, but this time it's because of a magic trick.

The charge from the school district — Wizardry!

Substitute teacher Jim Piculas does a 30-second magic trick where a toothpick disappears then reappears.

But after performing it in front of a classroom at Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Piculas said his job did a disappearing act of its own.

"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue, you can't take any more assignments you need to come in right away,'" he said.

When Piculas went in, he learned his little magic trick cast a spell and went much farther than he'd hoped.

"I said, 'Well Pat, can you explain this to me?' 'You've been accused of wizardry,' [he said]. Wizardry?" he asked.

Tampa Bay's 10 talked to the assistant superintendent with the Pasco County School District who said it wasn't just the wizardry and that Picular had other performance issues, including "not following lesson plans" and allowing students to play on unapproved computers."

Piculas said he knew nothing about the accusations.

"That... I think was embellished after the fact to try to cover what initially what they were saying to me," he said.

After the magic trick, Rushe's principal requested Piculas be dismissed. Now, Piculas believes the incident may have bewitched his ability to get a job anywhere else.

"I still have no idea what my discipline involves because I've never received anything from the school district actually saying what it entails," said Piculas.

As a substitute teacher, the Pasco County School District considers Piculas to be an "at will employee." That means the district doesn't need to have cause for not bringing him back at all.

Police: Mother shot 8-year-old daughter in leg to win $1 bet

Mother allegedly told her daughter not to say anything

A Sheboygan woman shot her 8-year-old daughter in the leg with a BB gun to win a $1 bet with her boyfriend, authorities said Friday.

Angelique R. Vandeberg, 28, now faces up to three years in prison on a felony count of intentional child abuse issued Friday. Vandeberg's daughter, a city elementary school student, told police her mother and the mother's boyfriend were drinking heavily before the shooting, which occurred April 26 or 27, according to a criminal complaint.

"In my time as a prosecutor I've seen alcohol influence people to do some strange things," said Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco. "When people are not in the state of mind to think right, you get strange things happening."

The girl said the shot initially hurt so much she was unable to walk, the complaint said.

Vandeberg, of 2704 S. 17th St., made an initial court appearance Friday and was released on a $5,000 signature bond. The complaint said a county social worker has been involved with the family dating to several months before the shooting, but authorities said confidentiality laws prohibit any comment on the case.

In general, Sheboygan County social workers try to keep families together, even in cases of child abuse, said Therese Janssen, child protective services supervisor.

"If at all possible, we put a safety plan in the home to keep the child (there)," she said, adding that the plan could include supervision by a social worker or in-home therapy. "If that works, that's our best-case scenario."

Vandeberg's attorney, public defender Patricia Adelman, did not return a phone call seeking comment Friday.

DeCecco declined to say if he will pursue charges against the boyfriend, though he said the investigation is ongoing. No additional charges are expected against Vandeberg, DeCecco said.

According to a criminal complaint:

Police began looking into the incident Wednesday after a school counselor reported it to police. The girl was shot three or four days earlier, but a circular bruise with a white-colored point in the middle remained visible on her thigh, the counselor said.

The girl said the shooting occurred in her mother's bedroom, where Vandeberg was with her boyfriend after she had consumed 10 to 12 beers.

The boyfriend bet Vandeberg $1 she wouldn't shoot the child, then handed her the BB pistol. Vandeberg took it and shot the girl. The bullet, which did not break the skin, bounced off her leg and struck her 7-year-old brother, who was not injured.

The boyfriend then grabbed the gun, ran out of the house and drove away. Vandeberg told her daughter not to say anything, advising that the incident was a "family thing" and the mother would go to jail if the girl told.

The child said she soon developed a stomachache and was in too much pain to walk, so she went to sleep.

Vandeberg, in an interview with a police detective, said the girl was lying to get her in trouble. She said the injury occurred three weeks ago when the girl fell while riding her bike and was hit in the leg by the handlebar.

DeCecco said prosecutors believe the girl's account.

"Even if a kid's upset with her parent, why would she make up a story of a BB being shot at her?" he said. "An 8-year-old child, it would appear to me, would not pick up on this particular avenue of vengeance."

I can't keep track of how many middle school students this teacher is servicing, but I did catch that she had sex with a 16 year old and then left in her boyfriends truck!

A suspended middle school teacher out on bail for allegedly having sex with two students will be back in court Tuesday after police say they caught her having sex with one of them again.

Stephanie Ragusa, 29, was arrested for the third time in about six weeks on charges of sex with a minor, MyFOXTampa reported. She was being held without bond at the Orient Road Jail.

"I can assure you that we are doing everything we can right now to make sure that she’s not out at liberty to do this again," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Lt. Fred Asteasuainzarra.

Officers discovered Ragusa and the now-16-year-old boy at his house about 12:20 p.m. Monday, the arrest affidavit states. Ragusa had gone to the teen's house to discuss the criminal case but wound up in bed with him, police said.

Detectives nabbed the woman as she was leaving and getting into her boyfriend's truck. Ragusa remained behind bars Tuesday, charged with two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Ragusa was first arrested March 13 and charged with having sex at least three times with a Davidsen Middle School student, then 14, between January and May of 2007. During that relationship, police say she began another with a second Davidsen boy, who was 15 when they started sleeping together in February of 2007.

Ragusa and the second teen, who was one of her math students, had sex at least 20 times, according to the sheriff.

She was initially released March 18 after posting bail, but was re-arrested April 15 when investigators say they determined she'd had sex with a second student. She has been charged with several counts of lewd and lascivious battery.

Ragusa was previously arrested on charges of driving under the influence in 2005, according to police records.

She last taught at Martinez Middle School but remains suspended without pay, according to the Hillsborough County School District.

Woman Arrested for Planning to Meet Eau Claire Boy for Sex

A judge set bond for the Albany, New York woman who police say made plans online to meet up with a 15-year-old boy.

Officers are holding 44-year old Tracy Taylor on $50,000 cash.

The Eau Claire Police Department says Taylor was taken into custody for attempted sexual assault of a child, using a computer to facilitate a sex crime and child enticement.

Officers say she met the 15-year-old boy on a social networking web site, and made plans to meet him for apparent sexual relations.

They say she had booked a room at the Days Inn Hotel on Truax Lane in Eau Claire, and checked-in Friday.

That's when detectives say they used a search warrant to go through her room. They say they found evidence that pointed to pre-planned sexual contact.

She's due back in court May 6th.

An Albany woman who drove roughly 18 hours to northwestern Wisconsin, allegedly in hopes of having a sexual tryst with a teenage boy she befriended online, remains jailed on attempted sex assault charges.

Tracy Taylor, 44, of 181 Second Ave., was in Eau Claire County Circuit Court Monday morning. A judge set bail at $50,000 bail before Taylor was sent back to county jail pending another appearance next week.

She did not enter a plea and did not qualify for a public defender, according to Erin Hanson, the Eau Claire County assistant district attorney handling the case.

Wisconsin authorities were tipped off to the planned sexual encounter by the teen's mother after the boy confided to his sister that he been corresponding online with a woman he believed to be 30 years old, according to a criminal complaint.

The document says the boy, identified in the court document as "JJF," told his sister he planned to spend the weekend with the woman.

The woman said she would bring condoms, according to the court papers.

As part of the investigation, the county sheriff's detective on the case reviewed text messages, including one from April 22 where the boy asked "Will we be able to have sex?" to which the woman allegedly replied: "I hope so. I love you."

Detectives learned Taylor had reserved a room at the Days Inn on Truax Lane in Eau Claire from Friday through Monday.

Police obtained a search warrant. After Taylor checked into Room 103, police found condoms, candles, baby oil and bottles of alcoholic beverages. Additionally, they found a letter from the teen giving his age, said the criminal complaint.

Eau Claire Deputy Police Chief Eric Larsen, said Monday that Taylor met the teen on the social networking site gaiaonline.com. He characterized it as a children's gaming Web site.

Taylor and the boy had been chatting online for about three months before they started talking on the phone and via text messages, Hanson said.

Besides attempted child sex assault, Taylor has been charged with use of a computer to facilitate a sex crime and child enticement. She due back in court May 6.

Eau Claire is in northwestern Wisconsin, about 90 miles east of the Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn., area.

After 16 years of playing the violin, Weinberg senior Lee Linderman now uses his fast fingers to make music of a different kind.

Linderman has mastered Guitar Hero, a series of rock guitar simulation video games that have garnered more than $1 billion in revenue in less than three years. He plays in his free time when he's not participating in Zeta Beta Tau, working at Norris University Center and playing club baseball.

Linderman is currently ranked 150th out of approximately 6 million people in the Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. He attributes his success to 16 years of playing the violin.

"In high school, my teacher told me that even though I wasn't the best violin player, I had the fastest fingers he had ever taught," Linderman said. "And that's exactly what Guitar Hero is, because pressing the buttons on the guitar is just like playing notes on a violin."

Linderman said he stumbled upon the first Guitar Hero game at a Best Buy video game kiosk in late 2006. Once Guitar Hero II debuted, he bought it and began playing nonstop.

"A lot of people start out at the easy or medium level and then slowly move up to hard and expert," Linderman said. "But I started at medium, moved onto hard after one song and then moved right to expert, and I've been playing that ever since."

In the past two years, Linderman has competed in 10 tournaments and has won more than $600 in cash and prizes.

He said he has never lost a game playing against another human being in person. Last fall, he won the chance to play before the Dethklok concert in Ryan Family Auditorium and most recently won Sigma Alpha Epsilon's Paddy Murphy Week Guitar Hero contest.

"Lee spends more times with video games and Guitar Hero than any human being should," said Danny Ecker, one of Linderman's roommates. "But it's really something else when people come by just to watch him play."

Although Linderman said he doesn't play nearly as much as he used to, he said Guitar Hero falls somewhere in between a passion and a hobby.

"I'm not so passionate that I still comb through every song to make sure it's absolutely perfect," he said. "But I'm still going to practice a lot before a tournament."

Pilot's Missing Laptop Causes Airport Security Scare

A pilot's laptop, filled with top secret security information was reported missing at Dulles Airport and the ripple effects were felt across the country.
The Mesa Airlines employee couldn't find the personal laptop he brought with him while co-piloting a United Express flight from Birmingham, Alabama to Dulles International Airport.
17 airports were forced to make emergency changes to access codes at Dulles, Atlanta, Phoenix, Chicago's O'Hare and San Antonio.
Various officials within the airline industry admit that with these access codes, someone who went though security could, with the touch of a few buttons, get onto a plane or get outside, right below a plane.
A TSA spokesperson said, "On April 17, Mesa Airlines notified TSA that an employee reported a laptop, containing confidential information, had been misplaced, lost or stolen."
Federal and airline officials admitted that the classified codes on the computer provided the pilot, through a keypad, access from the gate to the plane and down to ground level right below the plane.

Passengers were appalled. "That's just a major security breach for everyone that flies within the United States."

One airline insider tells ABC 7 News the laptop was probably stored in an overhead compartment used by passengers and likely stolen.

Federal officials quickly contacted 17 U.S. airports used by the pilot, warning them of the security breach. Media representatives for a number of those airports affected, including Dulles, Phoenix and Akron-Canton said the codes were promptly changed. ABC 7 News learned one security official at a midwest airport rushed to work in the middle of the night to prevent a breach.

A Mesa Airlines spokesperson said, "Any breach of aviation security is of primary concern to Mesa Airlines and we are fully cooperating with the TSA."

Meanwhile, a TSA official said the agency, "may look at increasing the standards for anyone who stores this type of information on their computers."

Airline officials said they have very little to go on because they don't know if the pilot was targeted or if it was a crime of opportunity. A spokesperson for Dulles said airport police are investigating.

Officials said the dolphin, called Sharky, hit the other dolphin during a Sunday show at SeaWorld's Discovery Cove. Porno movie dispute lands woman in jail

A woman is accused of chasing her boyfriend with a knife after thinking he was an actor in a pornographic movie they were watching together.

The victim says it all started when he and his girlfriend were inside his southwest Albuquerque home watching a pornographic move at 10:30 Wednesday morning.

That’s when the victim called 911 saying his girlfriend, 20-year-old Amanda Montoya, had a knife.

“She almost shanked me and everything. She put the (expletive) knife right under my throat," the victim told a 911 operator.

The victim, wearing only a pair of shorts took off down Five Points, begging the 911 dispatcher for help.

He said Moya had already stabbed him in the face and bitten him on his chest.

“She already has battery charges against her. She's not even supposed to be around me," the victim said.

The dispatcher told the victim to keep running and try to get inside a store.

The victim made it to a business parking lot at Bridge and Sunset with Moya still on his trail when he was able to flag down a deputy who was headed to the victim’s residence.

Deputies arrested Moya and charged her with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.

She was also charged with child abuse because deputies say she left her eight-month-old boy alone in the home while she chased her boyfriend down the road.

MOORESTOWN (CBS 3) ― More charges have been filed against a Burlington County police officer who was recently charged with sexually assaulting three girls.

Authorities announced Moorsetown Officer Robert Melia Jr., 38, has been charged with four counts of animal cruelty after allegedly engaging in sex acts with cows between June and December of 2006.

Melia and his former girlfriend, Heather Lewis were previously charged with three counts of aggravated sexual assault and one count of criminal sexual contact with three girls in his Pemberton home from 2003 until 2006.

Melia is being held on $510,000 bail.

Actor: Scientology Is 'Brainwashing'
Jason Beghe is the bravest actor in Hollywood. He’s come clean about his 14 years in Scientology, the religion that Tom Cruise reveres. He says the purpose of Scientology is to create a "brainwashed, robotic version of you."
He also says that he spent about $1 million to work his way up the Scientology ladder to become what’s known as an "OT5 auditor," or someone who listens to new members and teaches them the ropes.
He was so successful as a celebrity auditor, he says, that David Miscavige, the head of the sect, referred to him as "the poster boy for Scientology."
But now that Beghe and his wife have left the sect, the actor has concerns. They can be, he says, a vicious and vindictive group. When he asked for money back that he had banked for future study — some $60,000 to $70,000 — it was returned and he was banished.

"Once you ask for refund and repayment, that’s what it’s called, you’re not allowed to take another course or speak to another Scientologist ever again," Beghe says.
On Tuesday, I told you that Beghe had posted a three-minute "teaser" video explaining a little about his exit from Scientology. A second, longer video will be going up on YouTube Wednesday or Thursday. It’s not to make money or to get publicity for himself, Beghe says, and I believe him. "If it helps people, that’s what’s important."
And that’s because Beghe says that most Scientologists are completely insulated from the criticism that we all read or publish. All the jokes, the "South Park" stuff, anti-cult stories, real data about people who’ve suffered inside the sect largely go unnoticed by the Scientology community. "They just say, 'You don’t understand.'"
Beghe is just beginning to comprehend what an impact his announcement has made. It should rock the world of celebrity Scientologists, the people Miscavige has counted on to carry the sect’s message to the outside world and make it seem plausible.
But Beghe says not all the celebrity Scientologists are completely "in." Kirstie Alley, he says, is a friend and "could be gotten out." Tom Cruise, he says, was out for several years.
"He was brought back in around the time of his divorce from Nicole Kidman. And then they put him through something called Ethics Cycle after Penelope Cruz left. That’s when you make amends for having not been in it for a while."
Cruise’s Ethics Cycle, Beghe thinks, would account for the campaign Cruise went on while filming "War of the Worlds," through the meeting, courting and recruiting of Katie Holmes, the fight with Matt Lauer on "Today" and telling Diane Sawyer what kind of Scientologist he was on ABC — not to mention the couch-jumping on "Oprah."
Beghe, for one, says he was not a good celebrity Scientologist. "They would ask me to come to parties for Tom or John (Travolta); I would say 'yes' and not go."
Indeed, Beghe says he’s spent the last eight years trying to leave Scientology. "It was good for the first three years or so. But then I got nothing out of it."
"Scientology," Beghe says, "delivers what it promises under the guise of tearing away falsity, neuroses, psychoses. It creates a brainwashed, robotic version of you. It’s a ‘Matrix’ of you, so you’re communicating with people all the time using Scientology. So we’re seeing you ‘via’ Scientology. And it creates an addiction, so you come back for more."
He says that he initially was recruited through acting teacher Milton Katselas’ class. Katselas has been cited in many publications, including The New York Times, for exerting pressure on his students to join the sect.
"He gets kickbacks," Beghe says. Among Katselas’ students have been at least half a dozen celebrity Scientologists, including Giovanni Ribisi (who is thought to have recruited "My Name Is Earl" star Jason Lee and, in turn, Ethan Suplee) and his sister, Marisa, Leah Remini and Anne Archer.

"David Miscavige loved me. He took me to Hemet" — the Scientology fortress in the California mountains — "and he came with me to the premiere of 'G.I. Jane.' He let me do voice-overs for Scientology instructional videos, which was unheard of. And it would take a year to do a 15-minute video; he was that meticulous."
But in a short time, Beghe saw that things were not going so well. "I was unhappy and depressed. They would say it was their fault, the way they were handling my ‘case.’ And I’d flip out another $50,000 for another course."
Beghe says the biggest question at Scientology is where all the money has gone. "You never get any answers about it," he says. "And it’s all about money."
It took Beghe and his wife, Angie — whom he’d brought into the sect and who also achieved the high level of OT5 — more than a year to negotiate their way out. (Their first child even endured the Scientology "silent birth" we’ve heard so much about.)
Beghe says during that time his relations with his family and friends — like childhood pal David Duchovny — were strained. "Things are much better now with everyone," Beghe says.

Man charged after 5-year-old boy's urine tests positive for cocaine

A South Salt Lake man has been charged in a drug case in which a 5-year-old boy tested positive for cocaine when a woman used the boy's urine to cheat on a drug screening.
The woman, posing as a man, told authorities that "he" knew parents who were exposing their child to heroin and cocaine, court documents state. The woman admitted "he" used the 5-year-old's urine to take a drug test, but the urine came back positive for cocaine.
Later tests on the child's urine and hair also came back positive for cocaine and opiates, court documents state. A man, 54, was charged Monday with clandestine laboratory endangerment of a child, a third-degree felony. A woman codefendant - not the caller - was charged last week. - Erin Alberty

A copy of the 15 minute, 16 mm film was purchased by a New York businessman who plans to lock it up, memorabilia collector Keya Morgan told the paper. The original film is reportedly held by the FBI and still remains classified.
The flick, reportedly shot in the 1950s, shows the blonde bombshell engaging in oral sex with an unidentified male. Former FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover reportedly had his agents spend weeks trying to ascertain whether the man was either John F. Kennedy or Robert F. Kennedy, the paper said.

Misfired Artillery Crashes Into New Jersey Home, Fatally Injuring Cat

JEFFERSON TOWNSHIP, N.J. — A piece of artillery that was apparently misfired by the military crashed through the roof of a home miles away Friday and injured a young girl's cat, which had to be euthanized, officials said.
No people were injured when the 2-pound piece hit the Jefferson Township home about 2 1/2 miles from the Picatinny Arsenal and landed in the girl's bed, said Peter Rowland, arsenal spokesman. She wasn't home, but her cat was sleeping on the bed.
The homeowner told authorities she heard a loud noise around 2:40 p.m. and found the 6-by-4-inch object.
Picatinny officials told The Star-Ledger of Newark they were investigating. The base had been conducting tests Friday, and it wasn't immediately clear what type of artillery hit the home.
Picatinny is the site of the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center, whose mission is to conduct research, development and engineering for weapons systems

PAHRUMP, Nev. (AP) - Nicki Amouri hands her camera to a friend, throws her arm over another and smiles wide as she leans in for a shot with the monument her class came to visit.

It's a typical field trip memento—except that Amouri is in a brothel. The monument is a fluffy, queen-sized bed in a Western-themed party room reserved for VIPs and big spenders.

Amouri was one of a dozen Randolph College students who toured the Chicken Ranch, a legal bordello in the desert 60 miles outside Las Vegas. Thursday's class trip, which included seminars from the working girls, capped a course on American consumption and "the ideas that consume us."

"I think it's fascinating, this is fun for me," said Amouri, a junior at the private liberal arts school in Lynchburg, Va., that until last year admitted only women. "Not many people get to do this."

Academic and media inquiries are daily occurrences at many of Nevada's 27 legal brothels. Some shy away from the scrutiny, others, like the Chicken Ranch, welcome the publicity.

"We're always open to trying to educate the public about legalized prostitution," said Chicken Ranch general manager Debbie Rivenburgh, who acknowledged this was the first class tour request she'd received in 21 years.

The brothel tour was a natural fit for a class that tells students "don't just study America—live it," said Julio Rodriguez, the director of the college's American Culture Program.

Each semester the course examines a strain of American culture and ends with a class trip. Past destinations included post-Katrina New Orleans, Walt Disney World and the Civil Rights Memorial Center in Montgomery, Ala.

This year's focus on Nevada started with a professor's interest in water rights and conservation. It grew to include discussions of the wedding and entertainment industries and, inevitably, prostitution.

Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal. Brothels are allowed in 10 Nevada counties, though not in Las Vegas.

As part of their research, students were assigned "The Beauty Myth," by feminist author Naomi Wolf, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," by Hunter S. Thompson, and a "20/20" episode on prostitution with Diane Sawyer, among other research, professors said.

"We gave them all the option to either opt out or express reservations privately. No one did," said Rodriguez, adding that he received no objections from parents or administrators.

Prostitutes at the Chicken Ranch had plenty of reservations. Most don't jump at the chance to talk to strangers about what they do, Rivenburgh said. They worry about friends or family finding out. They know how others see them. It can be uncomfortable.

"Ninety-nine percent of the working girls will not participate. Each woman's got her reason and her limitations," Rivenburgh said. "I couldn't have done better with the two that said yes, though."

Alexis, 38, and Alicia, "over 30," sat on white folding chairs in front of the young, earnest women in the brothel's Victorian-style parlor, usually the setting for the "lineup." They would not give their last names. The group took close notes as a handful of television cameras and reporters looked on.

A blonde in jeans and platform boots, Alexis talked about the job's flexibility and the free time it has allowed her to write a book about her life. Alicia wore a black-and-white gingham nighty and a tattoo on her left breast that read "Famous."

"I enjoy giving back what some people don't get in their lives, as far as companionship, time, just the touch of a woman," she said. The job allows her to take care of her mother and grandmother. She's also in real estate.

The introductions gave way to questions.

Do you consider yourself a feminist?

Alexis: "Most women in this business wear the pants in the family."

Is there a certain look most men prefer?

Alicia: Every man wants something different. "There's all different kinds of girls."

Why aren't there brothels with male prostitutes?

A couple fighting about which gang their 4-year-old toddler should join caused a public disturbance that resulted in the father's arrest, Commerce City police said Thursday.

On Saturday, Joseph Manzanares stormed into the Hollywood Video store where his girlfriend worked, threatened to kill her and knocked over several video displays and even a computer, Commerce City police Sgt. Joe Sandoval said.After he ran out of the store, police were called and the 19-year-old was arrested at his home.

His girlfriend told police that they had been arguing about the upbringing of their son and which gang he should belong to.

The teen mother, who is black, is a member of the Crips. Manzanares is Hispanic and belongs to the Westside Ballers gang, the woman said.

"They have different ideas on how the baby should be raised. Basically, she said they cannot agree on which gang the baby would 'claim,'" Sandoval said.

Journal readers tend to get around, so there's a good chance that the person reading this editorial has been among the hundreds of thousands of travelers stuck on a tarmac or waylaid in a hotel by the recent wave of flight cancellations. And if you're wondering where to point the finger, we'd suggest Capitol Hill. Allow us to explain.

After the Federal Aviation Administration fined Southwest Airlines more than $10 million last month for inspection lapses, Congress rounded up the usual scapegoats for some hearings. FAA officials told the House Transportation Committee that the Southwest situation was "an isolated problem, not a systematic one." But James Oberstar, the Minnesota Democrat who chairs the panel, was unpersuaded.

"It's clear we have a structural problem at the FAA," declared Mr. Oberstar, to nationwide headlines. "I fear that complacency may have set in at the highest levels of FAA management, reflecting a pendulum swing away from vigorous enforcement of compliance, toward a carrier-favorable, cozy relationship."

The regulators got the message and went into panic mode. As is wont with government bureaucracies like the FAA, it proceeded to swing the pendulum waaaay back in the other direction – and hasn't stopped. An industry-wide "audit" commenced, and FAA inspectors set about finding something – anything – awry with an aircraft to show Mr. Oberstar and other Congressional overseers that the agency was up to the job of enforcing federal maintenance requirements to the letter.

American cuts more flights; Fliers fume

ATLANTA - American Airlines grounded hundreds more flights Friday as the inspection-related mess frustrated passengers and hurt an industry already bleeding cash thanks to high fuel costs.

Lawmakers were asking questions and some fed-up air travelers headed for trains. Others gave the airlines a pass, saying the companies were doing the best they could.

"If somebody's got a choice between being in a plane crash and being late, is there a choice?" Jane Bernard, a writer from New York who was delayed by at least three hours en route from LaGuardia Airport to Miami, said Thursday.

Mingo Valencia, a 60-year-old stuck at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport while heading home to Midland, Texas, wasn't so gracious.

"Poor management," he said bluntly.

Congress also weighed in Thursday. The Federal Aviation Administration official who ordered safety audits last month, Nicholas Sabatini, faced tough questions from a Senate subcommittee about the agency's lax oversight of airlines and his own accountability for recent breakdowns. The FAA noted that airlines had 18 months to check electrical wiring on MD-80 jets since an initial order was issued in September 2006.

American, a unit of Fort Worth, Texas-based AMR Corp., canceled another 595 flights Friday, bringing this week's total to nearly 3,100 due to safety inspections of its MD-80s. The carrier said disruptions will continue through Saturday as it works to comply with the federal safety order.

Alaska Airlines, Midwest Airlines and Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. joined the wave, each canceling a small number of flights on MD-80 aircraft Thursday.

At least 250,000 passengers have been affected by the American cancellations this week alone.

Other carriers like Continental Airlines Inc., JetBlue Airways Corp., AirTran Airways and Northwest Airlines Corp. said they passed the first round of FAA audits with a clean slate and did not expect extra maintenance work or flight delays. It was impossible to say whether that could change since the FAA is conducting another round of safety audits.

The cancellations come at a time of high fuel prices and mixed success among the major air carriers at getting domestic fare increases to stick. The fact that airplanes are flying very full is making it difficult for airlines that cancel flights to find empty seats on other carriers to rebook their passengers.

"This disruption is severe," said Webster O'Brien, an industry expert with aviation consulting firm Simat, Helliesen & Eichner. "People are going to be unhappy. There isn't going to be an easy way to walk everybody out of it."

Torch Relay is a non-competitive replication of the ancient Flame relay and a symbolic celebration of the Olympic Games. In a prophetic speech at the end of the Stockholm Games, on June 27, 1912, Baron Pierre de Coubertin said:

A YOUNG woman caught her belly button ring in her nostril this morning after falling from her bed.

The distressed 22-year-old called NSW Ambulance at 4am begging for assistance from paramedics.

She told triple zero operators she had fallen out of bed and her belly button piercing had jammed up her nose in the fall.

Ambulance officers rushed to Warwick Farm to assist the woman but she was not taken to hospital.

An ambulance spokeswoman said it had been a tough day for Sydneysiders, with a St Ives man stubbing his toe at 3.30pm.

Kellam High School teacher tied to escort services resigns

A social studies teacher resigned her position Wednesday as new information surfaced that shows she was involved with operating an escort service while on staff at Kellam High School.

One day earlier, Michelle Droelle told The Virginian-Pilot she got out of the business before she began teaching two years ago. But The Pilot has discovered escort service ad contracts signed by Droelle during the current school year – including one dated March 12, 2008.

Droelle, 33, voluntarily resigned, school officials said.

The contracts for phone book ads list Droelle as the owner of Penthouse V.I.P. and her home address in Ocean Lakes as the company’s location.

Penthouse V.I.P. is the umbrella for an operation that runs ads under at least 20 different names, such as Exotic Playmates, Sinful Seductions and Party Girls.

Droelle did not return calls Wednesday to her home or business. Her lawyer, Mike Joynes, said that “pursuant to an agreement with the School Board, Michelle can’t have any comment.”

However, the school division denies requiring her silence.

“She chose to resign,” spokeswoman Eileen Cox said. “We don’t have any conditions on her resignation.”

As of Tuesday, Droelle still managed the businesses on a day-to-day basis, according to several women who said they have worked recently for the escort service.

One dancer, who appears on the Web site of Penthouse V.I.P. but requested that her name not be used in this article, said she has worked for Droelle for more than a year. She said that once Droelle took the teaching job at Kellam, she tried to keep a lower profile in the company – avoiding the weekly meetings where the dancers settle up their accounts with the service and collect their paychecks, signed by Droelle.

“Michelle didn’t want the newer girls to see her so she stopped coming to the meetings for a while,” the woman said. “But then she started coming again. I saw her at one in the past month.”

The contracts, from 2006 through 2008, are for ads in The Talking Phone Book, Verizon Yellow Pages and Yellow Book USA. Penthouse V.I.P. spent more than $50,000 on ads in 2007 alone, according to the contracts.

The phone book ads, often featuring scantily clad women, appeared in South Hampton Roads and Peninsula editions. Phone numbers for at least eight of the escort service names also are registered in Droelle’s name.

Calls to Penthouse V.I.P. and its affiliates are answered by an operator who sets up appointments and explains that for $100, the “girls” will strip fully nude, perform lap dances and provide companionship for one hour. Such acts are legal in Virginia as long as they take place in private and everyone involved is at least 18.

The company’s Web site features provocative photos of a dozen young women and a list of services, including “1-on-1 encounters … fetishes … light domination.”

Last school year, Droelle was on staff at the Virginia Beach City Public School ’s Open Campus High School. She began working at Kellam High School in September, teaching world history and sociology courses.

Droelle had not informed the school division that she had another line of work, Cox said.

Before they are hired, all employees are run though FBI and State Police databases, according to the school division’s human resources department. Those background checks do not include business licenses.

School Board Chairman Dan Edwards said there is no need for further investigation because Droelle resigned.

“I think the subject is closed,” he said.

BANGKOK, Thailand (CNN) -- The bodies of 54 migrant workers from Myanmar were found Wednesday suffocated in a freezer on the back of a truck, police said.
Torsak Harnsanam, a police officer at Suksumran Police Station in Ranong province in southern Thailand, said a village chief alerted police at 10 p.m. (11 a.m. ET) that he had found the truck.
Police investigated and, in addition to discovering the bodies, found 67 other migrants from Myanmar who were alive inside the freezer, Harnsanam said.
The chief said survivors told him they had tried from inside the freezer to signal the driver, who eventually pulled over, discovered the bodies and fled.
Some survivors were taken to a hospital in a nearby village; others were jailed.
Survivors told police they sneaked into Ranong province from Myanmar's Victoria Point by fishing boat, according to reports from The Associated Press. They were then packed into a small container truck for a trip to Phuket.
Ranong province is located about 467 kilometers (290 miles) south of Bangkok just across from Myanmar's Victoria point. The province is regarded as a major trading route between the two countries, the AP reported.

Thailand has long depended on inexpensive labor from neighboring countries, including Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, which formerly was known as Burma.
The Thai government allows only a small number of immigrants from those countries, which has led to a number of smuggling cases.
There are about a million Myanmar workers registered to work in Thailand, and an additional million estimated to be in the country illegally to work mostly as laborers, the AP reported.
Some of the Myanmar migrants flee their country to escape armed conflicts between ethnic minority rebels and the Myanmar army, and others for lack of economic opportunity in their impoverished country, one of the poorest in Asia.
Many of those Myanmar migrants who do make it to Thailand, many illegal workers, wind up being abused by their employers.

Yes, giving a hickey hurts the person you're doing it to. You're breaking their blood vessels! But to some, a hickey is a temporary mark of love. Sort of like a red tattoo that fades naturally after a few days. It says "This girl (or guy) trusted me enough to let me damage their throat, one of the most sensitive parts of the human body".

Who Gives a hickey, the Boy or the Girl?
That's like asking who kisses who! Hickeys aren't a male or female thing. They're an "I was Here!" thing, sort of like a mark of pride. So either the girl or the guy can give it to each other. It's sort of a primitive way of saying "This boy is mine!" or "This girl belongs to me!"

Where does the Hickey Go?
Hickeys are marks of possession, so most people put them on the neck where they're nice and visible. Also, a hickey is caused by lips breaking blood vessels and that's easy to do on the sensitive neck. It's less easy to do, say, on the sole of someone's foot. Plus, nobody would see it there. Sure, you could put a hickey on someone's upper inner thigh, but unless they were wearing a swimsuit, nobody would see it. You might as well draw a smily face with magic marker :)

How do I Hide my Hickey?
A hickey is put there to show up! It's a mark of I-Was-Here. Why else did you get a hickey on your neck? But let's assume that some wild hickey attacker got to you and now you have to hide the evidence. Again, it's a bruise. It won't just vanish with warm water or cold water or lukewarm water. You can get make-up concealer and try that, to cover it while it fades away naturally. Wear turtlenecks or scarves. If you tend to be a really slow healer, take vitamins and eat healthy food so your body has half a chance of healing up well. Stand in dark corners :)

It will NOT work to put water, ice, eye drops, or aspirin on your hickey. This is a bruise. Blood vessels are broken, they need to mend.

What if I Don't Want a Hickey on Me / Don't Want to Give a Hickey?
In fact I know MANY people who hate hickeys and would never want to give or receive one. To them, it is deliberately causing a partner pain and anguish, and physically harming them. Why would you ever want to do that to someone you cared about? It's just as bad as hitting them with your open palm and then admiring the welt you left. If you personally do NOT want to give or receive a hickey, that is your right. Never let anybody pressure you into doing something you feel uncomfortable with. A true partner would always value your feelings, and would not try to push you into something you didn't want to do.
